Just got a chance to try this on my N900. I've always been a big fan of tethering my laptop via wifi to my cellphone. Unfortunately I've been getting alot of problems with joikuspot on my N900. Fortunately Mobile Hot Spot is a nice alternative and FREE :p

http://myn900.wordpress.com/2010/08/26/tethering-on-the-n900-part-4-hotspot/

Quote
Mobile Hotspot (Free)

Like all maemo.org downloads, this comes free – courtesy of the maemo.org community. Setup however, requires installation of a modified kernel (power-kernel), also available in Extras.
Kernel

1. Install the ‘Enhanced Linux kernel for power users’ package from the Application Manager.

2. Reboot.

3. To verify if the kernel was installed correctly enter ‘uname -a’ in X-Terminal. The output should be something like

    $ uname -a
    Linux Nokia-N900 2.6.28.10power37 #1 PREEMPT Wed May 26 00:24:03 EEST 2010 armv7l unknown

Un-install however requires a couple of commands on the command-line.
Mobile Hotspot

1. Install Mobile Hotspot from the Application Manager.

2. Launch Mobile Hotspot.

3. Select Connection.

4. Select Hotspot name and enter one.

5. Enable WEP encryption and enter a WEP code (at least 5 characters) if you wish. WEP is insecure anyway!

6. Click Start. When ‘Stop’ appears the hotspot is ready for service.

I often have issues with Mobile Hotspot. My wifi-router requires a reboot every time I run Mobile Hotspot at home. Not sure why that happens. You might also encounter some bugs but the app is still usable. It effectively hides all the complexities involved in the setup.

does this not rape your battery?
and does the overhead of the app cut into bw?

capability but i see they have an app than can do it and did they enable the OS to work in

portrait mode yet i remember them saying something abt an update that would enable that ?

but i haven't been able to find out more abt it.... any light that can be shed on these issues

would be helpful thanks

There are MMS apps and portrait mode is supported in several apps.

I was happy to see a working Mumble client on the N900, installed it last night and logged on to the GATT server, works flawlessly!

Arc yuh try that yet?

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=605441

Install the mumble client via app manager, then ensure that extras-testing repo is enabled, close app manager.

Go to xterminal and run a "apt-get install libcelt0-0" while ur net connection is active. It will download the necessary codecs. When you run mumble you will know how to use it since it is a direct port of the pc version :)

Should I buy the Nokia N900?
« Reply #46 on: October 18, 2010, 03:47:25 PM »
Thinking of buying 1 of these, very, very soon (next week)! Anyone can give me a reason not to? Must be in the ~399 range or a fault that cannot be overlooked.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm pretty happy with it (got it a year ago) A few things to consider though.....

* Flash 10 support isn't available yet on the official firmware, though I did read there are some workarounds on forums.

* The Maemo OS is pretty much dead to Nokia, the successor, Meego is a new platform. Not such a big deal since the apps are pretty portable and since maemo is open source there are alot of developers. A good example is the Mumble client, someone simply ported it over from Linux for the Maemo kernel (Linux base)

* It isn't as flashy as all those new Android phones hitting the market, the UI isn't really that flashy but gets the job done for me

* Battery life, as has been mentioned this phone will not win awards for battery life, make sure to get a spare charger :p

* Phone is a bit bulky I guess compared to others, I've grown accustomed to it.

Show me another phone that can play games using a wireless PS3 controller, while attached to a TV, and I'll say 'buy that phone instead'.  :laughing7:

Update: Ok a serious WTF, very few things run well on our poor Bmobile GPRS, amazingly I am talking on the GATT server and it sounding real good on GPRS yes, not even Skype sounds so good. Double WIN lol.

Sadly, GPRS has been a hit-or-miss affair for me on the N900.  Its probably the locations
I frequent just don't have that good coverage.  For example, in my office here on Park St,
IN Port-of-Spain, my GPRS simply will not connect.  When I go outside, it will eventually connect,
but only after MANY retries.

Not sure if its a coverage, hardware, or firmware issue.  Wi-fi works splendidly though.

That is odd, there are areas with poor GPRS signal but I've found POS for the most part to be relatively good.

OK...so I got Mumble working...and was soon chatting away like normal over wi-fi.

Lawd have mercy...and it even recognised my BT headset as mic/speaker right off the bat too.

The win just keeps on trucking with this phone yes.  :)

Fellas, I recently came across a deal for an N97 that is saving me around $1000 from the purchase of this phone. The money is a little issue, but not the most important factor. I don't tinker around like u guys when it comes to phones, but the main use of my phone will be movies and music, with the odd game every once in a while. Also as a digital camera. I have a blackberry for all my internet stuff so that's not important.

Should I grab unto that n97 of wait it out to get this one?

If u are getting the N97 for a good price go for it, the n900 and N97 cameras are pretty much the same. Many of the N97 bugs were sorted out last year....the N97 will handle ur movies/music nice.
