The Ten Most Populated Cities in the World
By: Shyla Batliwalla

We live in a big world with a lot of people. With global population racing upwards of 6.8 billion and environmental issues taking the lime light, overpopulation is a growing concern. Even though no city in the United States ranks among the ten most populated cities in the world, it is the number one contributor of carbon emissions. (Just something to ponder …) Although these cities may need a lesson in population control, they make up for it with rich culture and picturesque history.

1. Shanghai, China
Population: 14,348,535
Shanghai, known as the Paris of the East and Queen of the Orient, is one of the busiest and most dynamic cities in the world. More modern then other Chinese cities, Shanghai boasts European cityscapes and an obsession with the latest in technology and fashion.

2. Mumbai, India
Population: 11,914,398
Traffic, wealth, poverty, nightlife, style, world-class cuisine, and a film industry more rocking than Hollywood make up India’s answer to Manhattan. While its pollution and poverty are a lot to take at first glance, a second glance will show you one of the most culturally-rich and exciting cities in the world.

3. Beijing, China
Population: 11,509,595
Beijing is a modern and competent home of the communist regimen in China. Its ancient architecture represents the city’s diverse political history. The grand imperial awe and quintessential Chinese culture of Beijing is not to be missed.

4. São Paulo, Brazil
Population: 11,016,703
São Paulo, the cultural capital of Brazil, is the largest and richest city in the country. The nightlife and art scene is among the best on the continent. The motto of Paulistanos (residents of São Paulo) is to work hard and play harder, and it shows.

5. Seoul, Korea
Population: 9,895,217
Fashion-filled and culture-rich Seoul is the capital of Korea. It is a vibrant, up-all-night Asian city that is rarely explored by the conventional traveler.

6. Moscow, Russia
Population: 10,433,869
Moscow is a juxtaposition of hip and modern with medieval and historic. The hub of modern Russia, Moscow enjoys commerce and culture that rural Russians can barely fathom.

7. Dehli, India
Population: 9,817,439
Delhi, India’s northern capital, embodies the country’s coexistence of rich luxury and extreme poverty. Delhi holds the most delectable global cuisine, the most lavish shopping, and most historic and grand architectural remnants in all of India.

8. Chongqing, China
Population: 9,691,901
Chongqing has been largely ignored by the rest of China until recent years. It is now being fed large amounts of money to catch up economically with the rest of China’s east coast. This transitory state makes it fascinating place to visit with the decrepit homes on stilts standing meagerly next to new gleaming skyscrapers.

9. Istanbul, Turkey
Population: 9,555,719
Nicknamed the “world’s hippest city,” Istanbul offers a generous helping of rocking nightclubs and restaurants nestled up with cutting edge fashion and design. Istanbul by day is overcome with historic buildings and exciting museums, but Istanbul by night is when the magic really happens.

10. Karachi, Pakistan
Population: 9,339,023
This former capital is still the heart of Pakistan’s rich economy. Its intense religious diversity does not bode well for foreign travelers and many explorers avoid Karachi in fear of civil unrest. However, Karachi still boasts some of the most picturesque historic mosques and mountain treks in all of Pakistan.

And yet for such a new city NYC is so nasty (literally) when you compare it to older places such as London. The very city smells of pollution... anyways I wonder if there is a most densely populated places on earth list... can you guess who'd be at the top?

India and China.  Them two countries alone make up just about half the world's population.
I'm actually not that surprised to see more than a few Chinese and Indian cities all up in that list.

My guess would be Macau...or if you're referring to sovereign nation, then Monaco. Don't think anywhere else has risen to such levels since I've read that more than 10 years back.

If you're referring to cities, I believe Mumbai is the most densely populated city, followed by Kolkata... I'm not 100% sure on this though.

I guess it depends on how you define the city. From Wiki:

Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō?), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to?),[2] is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan and is located on the eastern side of the main island Honshū. The twenty-three special wards of Tokyo, each governed as a city, cover the area that was once the city of Tokyo in the eastern part of the prefecture, totaling over 8 million people. The population of the prefecture exceeds 12 million. The prefecture is the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, the world's most populous metropolitan area with 35 million people and the world's largest metropolitan economy with a GDP of US$1.191 trillion at purchasing power parity in 2005.

Their GDP is astounding really, a city/prefecture with the purchasing power of large nations.

New york feels like omgggg stop touching meeee ahhhhhh get awayyyy

but if the population of these places far exceeds NY then zomg we need to move
