Dell compatible processor

Just a quick question here( mods if this is in the wrong category adjust to suit)

The question is are all intel microprocessors compatible with a Dell mobo? I have an old dimension 4550 and i was hoping to simply change the processor to upgrade but a friend was telling me that it might not work becuase dell mobo's are cpu specific.

Short answer is no. Dell mobos, like all mobos conform to a particular standard. Most likely, they system you're using is a socket 468 for p4's. If you changing your cpu, you *must* get another socket 468 cpu to replace it with. Nothing else would work.
