Best wireless N router?

Well boy you lucky, because ALL my interactions with Linksys products has been plagued by some problem or the other, both personal usage and professional. So as they say, not me an dem again!

lol, arc linksys hit the the bottom of the barrel since cisco bought 'em and relegate the product line to "wshb" quality.

As opposed to "overengineered imba kickass" quality that we were accustomed too.

everything else, my dlink could do....but it doesn't have a "live" bandwidth monitor and traffic shaping. Two of my most missed features from winroute.

All I have to say is that DD-WRT is THE shit. Im not sure if these things can be done on normal built in firmware in some routers, but this is new to me and im loving myself.




Exhibit A: You are able to create policies that will block torrent access via ports. You can also select specific clients to which the policy is applicable. There are also time of day settings where all policies can be implemented on the DAY and TIME you want. VERY sexy. So ive set up a policy on mine to block ALL torrent access while keeping the Internet accessible so daddy wont make me lag out while he downloading some National Geographic torrent and I trying to kill Notnice.

Theres also a dedicated internet killing option that totally kills ALL internet access, leaving only local file access in tact. Again, this can be set on an individual client basis. Mom can watch youtube while im gaming either, but she can watch some episode of True Blood until I done pfft.






Exhibit B: Bandwidth monitor, it does the job I guess. Nice feature to get an overall idea of whats happening. Yes, it is live, updates every second. Real time.





Exhibit C: You can see all ip connections that the router handling. You can click on an ip right there and get detailed information on its country of origin, state, even city and ISP. Pretty sweet.





Exhibit D: This shows the cpu and memory status. 480mhz cpu and 128mb ram? Those were standard specs for a full pc not too many years ago. Hell yea.


Basically, im VERY VERY pleased with this thing for the access restrictions options ALONE, not even mentioning all the other great features. Again, most might be possible with stock firmware on a select few devices, but the features on this dd-wrt is definitely out of the ordinary.

Normally I keep routers out of sight behind the monitor, but with this beauty I have it where I can see its sexy figure.

since you running the mega build go to the services menu, you will jizz in your pants. DD-Wrt is the flick i have been using it for about 3 years now the firmware just goes above and beyond most users needs.

Yea boy. But the most interesting thing there for me is the USB thing. I can get it to detect a flash drive plugged in but I cant quite figure out how to get it shared on the lan. Any thoughts?

Of course it would be easier to do that but the router have the feature and even though I dont need it, it will be nice just to see it.

nah... cuz then you hadda setup permissions and give users a pwd to connect etc, and then if the pc off... so u know..
i think its a cool feature to make a "quick nas"

I've also been using this custom firmware since I heard about it way back when Gotta love the added features it brings to a previously "wshb" router

I've heard some people adding a usb hub to the router and sharing multiple files, printers etc... I was like wtf!?! cool

yea but... unless every1 have windows 7 on their pc (i.e. home groups)... you would be compromising security of your system...
i mean not that anybody home would be trying to hack you... but... you know how we IT guys are...
and it still doesn't solve the problem of the person turning of their pc etc.

but as you said.. lol not so quick granting it taking so long to get working

I read the guide slaming posted. Turning on the usb is easy enough. The trouble is actually getting the drive accessible. A couple options I saw required a third party program to see the share but im not seeing anything that will let windows handle things by itself. The dd-wrt is linux based to im sure thats part of the problem.

did you try installing samba to the router, samba is the linux alternative to smb in windows. Sorry i can't be much help as i never tried to install a usb drive to my router. The most i have done is install a printer, which was a whole different process than the one the guide provides.

Samba/CIFS guide this may help with the windows sharing

You can also use the NAS feature to host files using the built in ftp server if the smb sharing dose not workout.

Honestly boy slaming I dont really feel the desire to dig up in that feature too much. I have a server thats on 24/7 with over 6tb of attached storage. I just plugged in a 2gb flash drive to see whats what and I just threw out my only printer (of 6 years) this morning so those usb's going to be pretty much vacant.


I'll bookmark that link and maybe one day when im really bored ill look into it.

dunno if u guys decided on a router, i didnt go through the entire thread
but the Buffalo router are good ones..very stable backing as well

very little down time if any at all..

Ive spent the last two pages raving about my New Asus Rt N16.

The buffalo are good routers as well, the best of which have dual band and dd-wrt support, just that they were priced more than I was willing to shell out on a router.
