Best wireless N router?
« on: September 25, 2009, 06:08:29 PM »
Guys, couple months ago I was doing some cursory research on wireless N routers. I was guided to the TEW-639GR from Trendnet mainly because it boasted a couple of the main features I was looking for which is wireless n (duh), good enough range, throughput and at least 4 10/100/1000 wired ports. However, the lack of reviews on it have me going like

sry Arc

There's the Dlink DIR 655 and the Linksys WRT310N. Problem is, all the poor reviews also have me going like...

Sry again Arc lol.

Anyone currently using a wireless N with gigabit ports and having an absolutely splendid experience? If so, state name, rank and serial number plix plox.

PS. Somebody link we up a networking equipment board in the Hardware, tweaking and networking section plix.

The linksys is rubbish

I use the dlink (all of the beatings online have been coming courtesy the DIR-655)

I can endorse it as the better of the two.

No rebooting/failed signal issues whatsoever.

I am thoroughly disappointed in the range though. Trinidad's solid concrete walls wreaks havoc on a wireless signal.

Getting only one bar signal strength literally two walls away. Regardless if you use a wireless n adapter or a regular G. steups.

I even used D Link Adapters, to be brand consistent. Same result. Open air...great range...through walls...kaput.

Your mileage may vary depending on the construction of your home.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

So them poor reviews have you jizzing in your pants!!?

I use a Linksys WRT150N.  Works pretty well. Had it running since mid 2008
with less than 10 reboots, and most of those were due to TTEC's shenanigans.

...and thats through SEVERAL solid, prefab concrete walls, so I don't know what crack
NGW is on today.  :laughing7:

I get signal all outside by the road, in front my gate.

Aye!!! I an all have to buy an N router in the next month or so. A friend lent me their G router months now, and they need it back. These are the router I'm choosing from....

- Linksys WRT160N-RM Wireless-N Router
- Linksys by Cisco WRT320N Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router
- Linksys by Cisco WRT400N Dual-Band Wireless-N Router
- Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router
- D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router
- Belkin N1 Vision Wireless Router

Which of these should I go with? (one if I were on a budget and one if money wasn't an issue)

Oh crap, is the jizz video tha pic come from. Then nah scratch that hahahahahah.

I'm also not a fan of Linksys after dealing with many a troublesome WRT54g's at work. I currently use an el cheapo msi I picked up from a local vendor years ago. If anyone knows where I live, I have the router in the back of the house where my room is and I get signal by the neighbour over the road...and my house is a good distance from the road.

Noob, yuh have me worried about that poor signal thing. It might be enough to make me put aside my dislike of Linksys products and go with the WRT310N. Then again plenty people talking about overheating and dropped connections so im back to square one. Let me look at those rage put up there.

*edit* The 400n seems to have the least issues among the users...will check up on some actual reviews later.

The wrt310n was no better at penetration.

I just think Trinidad class walls are so solid, that wireless doesn't stand much of a chance through em. If you've got gypsum walls, you'll get strong signals.

Or better yet, a japanese type house. paper walls ftw.

if you don't like the linksys you can try an apple branded wireless router, i would recommend the airport extreme. I have been leeching wifi off one for a while now, and using up a lot of bandwidth(torrents) and it hasn't crashed yet, but you will have to pay a pretty penny to get one but there worth it.

been using a linksys draft n router
and have had the pleasure of moving to three different houses since ive had it, no problems
it does get quite warm though, but penetration and throughput has never been an issue.

Its the non fancy older model with the two antennas. Dont buy the pretty noob accessible ones though.

Oh one more note, black berries dont seem to like wireless n routers

yeah, still have the 310n in a box on top the deep freeze, piece o 'ish router.

lol @ paper houses.

I'm no fan of the solid concrete, don't get me wrong. Though it might come in handy in times of a hurricane.

Still cabled in my main machine for lag free gaming. Recently moved the comp so now I'm on wireless again. Enjoy having the edge until I run a cable into this room.

Then is even more lihixxxxxxxxxxx in cod iymc.

apple = $$$>$>$>$>$$$$

Crixx, you're absolutely right...the older linksys kit is quite often superior to the newer models. Real shame. They used to be the best bang for buck till cisco bought them out. Been a crap shoot since.

I'm liking the WRT320N just because it has Gigabit ports.

Need to do some more research before I make a solid commitment.

The dlink is cheaper and has gigabit. Arcman, you still gonna put the wrt150n ahead of it???

Head's up guys. I just pulled the trigger on the Linksys WRT160N-RM refurbished router. Doesnt have gigabit ethernet switching ability, but at $26, me eh arguing.

I'll see how it plays out when it gets here.

i know i'm late seeing this thread but i bought the Netgear WNDR3700 Dual Band Wireless-N router to upgrade from my old linksys WRT350N (with storage link) and the signal boost is almost double that of my linksys, its certainly the best wireless-n router i've used so far but its still expensive since its new, if anyone else is interested in getting a powerful N router, should check this one out.
