Nokia E71 = that new hotness...
« on: September 16, 2009, 05:46:01 PM »
This phone might not be a new model, but its new to ME so whatever.

All I can say, is WOW.  NEVER have I been so impressed by a mobile phone.  The list of features here is STAGGERING,
to say the least.  I'm still discovering cool new things every day.  I put it to you now, that the Nokia E71 is better than
the Blackberry in everything but the push-email, and maybe the keyboard.  As for OS and apps, well, lets just say there's
no looking back now.  I've got Skype, MSN, Opera Mini, Gmail, Hotmail, Google Maps, all working flawlessly.

...and did I mention wi-fi connectivity, and stereo bluetooth?

...and the FM radio.  How many super high-end phones don't have such a simple thing.

Don't even TALK about the number of media formats, including mp3, wma, aac, mp4, wav...

Damn...I can even view PDFs and MS Office files.

The Symbian UI is nice and smooth, switching between apps and screens is a breeze.  No annoying lockups/freezes (so far).
And the buttons...oh so customizable.

Its actually a lot slimmer than it looks in the picture, and surprisingly light.

The only beef/con I have an issue with is the 2.5 mm headset port.  I mean, come on Nokia, most
off-the-shelf headphones are 3.5 mm.  You REALLY couldn't spare that extra mm? ???
Even so, the included headset is adequate for radio/music listening, but its not for audiophiles.

Oh, and by the way, its unlocked, brought to you/me by the good folks at Amazon.

Better than Blackberry?  HELL yes.

Best phone evar?  Debatable.

Yeah I got my E71 last year, it's a very good phone. I did buy one of those 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm adapters so no biggie, also works great with stero bluetooth as you mentioned.
The biggest disappointment for me was the camera on the phone, though I didn't expect much from a business class phone, I was still hoping for a bit more despite what the reviews said.

However that limitation was more than compensated for by the battery life, an amazing 10+ hours talktime (2g).

Fortunately there is a new model out the E72 with 12+ hours talk time (2g), better camera, 3.5mm jack etc. That phone also takes win.

Looking at that spec sheet, and improvements of the E72, I'd say that THAT particular model
could be that new hotness.  I absolutely LOVE that E72.  I love how they moved the loudspeaker,
and smartly placed the (now 3.5 mm) headphone port on top.  4GB included memory-card?  NICE.

Funny enough though, for all its uberness, I did not get a memory card with mine.  Even the manual
listed it as a 'optional enhancement'.

It looks like Nokia listened to all the little nitpicks that users had with the E71 and upgraded them.

GG Nokia.  When my E71 finally dies, I already have its replacement in mind. :)

The phone itself cost 300 US.  The rest of charges ($TT) were as follows:

Freight:         76.20
Insurance:    31.75
Duty:            400.00
VAT:              360.00

Which comes to just over 2700 TT in all.  Not sure what is charged for in stores here, but I'm sure its substantially more.

Waiting on a bess Camo skin from Skinit. :happy0203:
I'll post up some pics when its fitted.

I need a protective film for the screen though.

Yeah, I kinda figured that the local prices would be of the 'rapish' ( [c] Nephilim ) variety.

Just installed Joikuspot, which is an app that essentially turns your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot, so you can easily share
its internet connection with other devices (read: laptops).

OMG...never has mobile internet connectivity on my netbook been so easy.  I'm getting even more throughput with this
setup than bluetooth.  All it takes to go online after you've installed it on your phone is to start the app, find and connect to
the wi-fi hotspot it creates, and BAM...internetz.

The ONE drawback is that the app is quite the battery hog, but the ease of use, and increased throughput MORE
than makes up for that.

I am LOVING this app.

Lets see your vaunted Crackberries do THAT.  :)

Yeah I've been using joikuspot for a few years now, it's good though only in short bursts since your battery life goes down quick. The additional heat from it also has me questioning how safe it is for the battery over the long term. It is a feature I am missing on the Maemo platform of my n900 but a wifi tethering software solution is also coming to it shortly.

Edge service is slow, I would say maximum of 200 kbps with very high latency 400 ms+
I believe the data plans BB uses is identical to the gprs service (edge) that I currenly use. It is still nice to have net wherever you are though, especially when you need information quickly.
