Quake Live Beta signups
« on: April 16, 2008, 10:25:49 PM »
Quote
As much as years of consuming have taught us to love purchasing goods and services, we have to admit that we still love free stuff just a skosh more. If you share in our gratis glee, you may be interested to hear that id, developer of web-based Quake III port Quake Live (formerly known as Quake Zero) is currently accepting sign-ups for the beta program.

There's not much else on the site at this point, you're basically just firing your email address off into the inky blackness of the internet and hoping for the best. Of course, there's not really anything you can do about that. The dark side of free stuff is that you lose your most powerful asset: The ability to complain about anything.

EDIT : http://www.quakelive.com/

They are inviting 1500 people to beta test the game a week... if you have broadband , a half decent machine and time to kill... I'd suggest you take a gander
http://www.quakelive.com/ sign up here for beta.

Making Quake and Quake engine games available to the masses through a web browser.. I'm guessing through java, which would make it possible for ever OS and system to run quake !
Java combined with procedurally generated textures and stuff would make the data small enough to stream on a normal connection, and with everyone having a 3ghz+ or dual core system these days , it shouldn't be a problem .

COD4 is great no doubt.

Still, Quake 3 defined an era in gaming. As did starcraft. Anything involving those two names should be on a gamers radar just based on pedigree alone! lol

Quake 3 in a browser means any n00b on any OS with a half decent system will be able to play it .  millions of potential gamers.
Plus.. pioneering this technology will allow for more advanced browser games .

The closed beta is in progress right now , with 1500 people being chosen at random to play per week. Sign up and i'm sure you have a very good chance of getting in.

Ok so I was playing this game for the first time last night. I must say, IT FREAKING HARD!!! I have never been so badly destroyed in my life. I will learn this game and come back with a vengeance. It's pretty fun.

Tried it a bit so far, brings back some good old memories to say the least, though my ping is messing me up royally (getting a ping of about 140ms)...

Skill matchups don't work yet since stats are disabled for some reason though...

i tried it when it was close beta , really cool if you loved the original Q3 .

I have to be in a mood to play it , split second reflexes aren't a 24/7 guarentee.

It seems to be moreof a resource hog than you'd think tho, uses 50% cpu time on my core 2 e6600 .
