The Official Ultimate Fighting Championship and MMA Thread

Guys, if you are into martial arts, DO NOT MISS the UFC 100 battle royale.

Takes place tonight, featuring Broc Lesnar vs Frank Mir, GSP (my personal fav) vs Alvez. Two must see fights.

Here is the full blitz on UFC 100

Date: July-11-2009

Location: Mandalay Bay Events Center, Nevada

It's the biggest event in mixed martial arts history, and for UFC 100, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is bringing out the big guns. Two championships will be on the line when UFC heavyweight title holder Brock Lesnar defends his crown against rival Frank Mir in their long-awaited grudge match, and UFC welterweight champion Georges "Rush" St-Pierre puts his belt up for grabs against Brazilian knockout artist Thiago "Pitbull" Alves. Also, The Ultimate Fighter coaches collide as Dan Henderson takes on Michael "The Count" Bisping in a pivotal middleweight showdown.

Brock Lesnar Vs. Frank Mir
Georges St-Pierre Vs. Thiago Alves
Jon Fitch Vs. Paulo Thiago
Dan Henderson Vs. Michael Bisping
Yoshihiro Akiyama Vs. Alan Belcher
Mark Coleman Vs. Stephan Bonnar
Mac Danzig Vs. Jim Miller
Jon Jones Vs. Jake O'Brien
Dong Hyun Kim Vs. Jonathan Goulet
CB Dollaway Vs. Tom Lawlor
Matt Grice Vs. Shannon Gugerty

For those living under a rock and don't know what UFC is, read below for a quick study:

Soaring Popularity Leads to UFC Milestone
By Dave Skretta
The Associated Press

Marc Ratner vividly remembers driving to the Mandalay Bay Events Center on the Las Vegas Strip.

It was late September 2001, and the longtime head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission couldn't believe what was unfolding. Thousands of people had lined up more than an hour before the doors opened for UFC 33, the first mixed martial arts event sanctioned in his state.

"I'd never seen anything like that for boxing," Ratner recalls.

The sport was still years away from what it's become, a multibillion dollar industry with the Ultimate Fighting Championship carrying the banner. That first Las Vegas show was plagued by problems, including a fight card that went longer than the pay-per-view TV window. As a result, fans watching at home never saw the conclusion of the main event.

Still, Ratner - who later joined the UFC - could tell brothers Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and a street-smart former boxing promoter named Dana White were on to something. Less than eight years later, the UFC was poised to stage the biggest, most lucrative event in its history: UFC 100 on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay.

Once branded by John McCain as "human cockfighting" and banned from television, MMA is sanctioned in every state with an athletic commission except New York. Tickets for Saturday night were snapped up in minutes, and some ringside seats were available on StubHub this week for $45,000 each. The UFC's pay-per-view audience surpassed boxing and World Wrestling Entertainment for the first time in 2006 and has been on top since.

The organization has expanded to England and Germany and is poised to take on France and Australia next. There is a fever for it in Canada, and a palpable sense of momentum for a company that just five years ago was more than $40 million in debt.

"All the things going on right now, whether it's UFC 100 or going to Germany for the first time, it's really the way it's been for us the last nine years," White told The Associated Press recently. "The great thing about this sport, it transcends all cultural barriers, language barriers, because I don't care what language you speak, what color you are, what country you're from, at the end of the day we're all human beings. Fighting is in our DNA."

The UFC began in 1993 as a tournament to crown the world's best fighting style, featuring everything from boxers to a sumo wrestler. There were no weight classes, gloves or rounds. There was no judging and virtually no rules. The only way to win was by knocking out your opponent or making them quit, which is precisely what a scrawny jiujitsu expert named Royce Gracie did.

The organization stood on the brink of bankruptcy before White and the Fertittas came up with "The Ultimate Fighter," couching the sport in a reality TV format. The cable show was an instant hit.

The UFC 100 made history in more ways than one.

The torrent is presently the #1 leeched file on Mininova as of today.

Twice as much leechers as the second spot, Watch Men Directors cut. lihixxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Why not call it the MMA thread ? Now that UFC 100 is over the next big PPV is Affliction Trilogy on Emancipation Day.

Fedor vs Josh Barnett is the main event. Most MMA news sites rank Barnett the #2 Heavyweight in the world vs Fedor as the #1 (Undisputed).

Not a bad idea, updated to suit. Fedor is a beast.

Wish he would come in the UFC

His contract with Affliction is gonna be up soon. If UFC passes enough money per fight, you just might see him come in.

Yes fedor coming to UFC would be nice only for the access he would have to beating the few men in UFC that he has not already beaten, to cement him as the greatest MMA fighter of all time.

i saw a yahoo news press release on Brock's behaviour but didnt read it , but they said he was extremely unsportsman like
gotta find out what went on .

Well Lesnar is the man for fedor to beat.

and dana just said (as in today) that fedor should be coming to the ufc.

http://mmajunkie.com/news/15488/dana-white-says-fedor-emelianenko-will-fight-in-the-ufc-brock-lesnar-fight-imminent.mma

Still left to be seen. That will sell out any venue in seconds, for sure. lol

UFC 100 tickets sold out before they even went on sale to the public. That was for Brock, GSP and Henderson

Scalpers paradise.

Imagine what will happen if Fedor really ends up in the octagon.

Time to start buying lotto tickets from now to afford a seat ring side.

even though everyone will predict a Fedor win against Brock
which i also agree with, i think hes the best fighter ive ever seen dead or alive.

I think the real thrill with Fedor being in UFC wont just be to beat Lesnar, it will be to topple all the challengers that UFC has to offer.

Even though he has beaten almost all their greats, once he dominates in UFC, there is no one left that can try to dispute his greatness.

Urijah Faber being in UFC would also be superb. IMO the two best light weights in the world are Faber and Aoki, both monsters.

Money has never been the problem in getting Fedor to sign, not back in 2007 and it won't be now. The problems are the sambo restrictions, the championship clause and the fact that his manager Vadim is clearly looking out for interests other than Fedor's with his insistence that M1 co-promote everything Fedor does.

I'd love to see Fedor in the octagon but even if he doesn't go to UFC there's still Overeem, Werdum, Rogers etc for him to fight.

yeah the sambo restrictrions are retarded and a clear attempt to try and make Fedor lose fights.

Not very ultimate fighter of UFC with that one

What restrictions ? I thought they didn't want him competing in other sambo competitions even though it is his national sport. What sambo restrictions does UFC have ?

That's what I meant. They would restrict him from competing outside the UFC, sambo included. I think this will eventually be a non issue. In a recent interview Lorenzo Fertitta said he'd be happy to ease up on the sambo thing as long as Fedor doesn't compete within 3months of a signed fight. Seems fair.

Funny though that I don't think they mind when fighters go to ADCCto compete. I think Maia is going or has a expressed a desire to go. One slip up there and you could get your s*** f***ed up by some joint lock.

The only problems now with Fedor are the championship clause and the co-promotion with M1.

your best bet is online for the matches. No local (flow channel) carries them afaik.

That means you'd have to go direct tv PPV (pay per view) or spike tv.

It's available online the next day, so I just avoid news papers, twitter, facebook and news websites until then. lol

Don't want to read a headline about who won and spoil the match!

Welcome to the world of MMA. you'll not be disappointed.

I would like to thank GSP for giving me a win in a jiu jitsu match today. (used his infamous cradle take down)

I'm pretty sure local directv PPV does not have UFC events. If they do I'm an ass because we've had directv for 12 years and i never knew.

And yes, there's a trini MMA fighter, Gary Goodridge. He resides in Canada now but he's trini born. Do yourself a favour and leave it at that. Looking at his record (MMA or kickboxing) is rather...painful. He does take so much licks they could make him Minister of National Security in this climate and he ent go feel it.

he has more wins than losses in his mma record.

his kickboxing record is the one that's painful to watch! lol

still, the man fought fedor. Arguably the greatest fighter in the world.

Not a feat many mma fighters can attest too.
