Australian town bans bottled water
« on: July 09, 2009, 02:17:29 PM »
Bottled water is so bad for the environment I hope more towns and cities follow this....

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25756635-5001021,00.html

THE sleepy Southern Highlands hamlet of Bundanoon has voted to ban bottled water, just hours after the New South Wales Government announced its own H2O boycott.

At a community meeting last night, Bundanoon locals overwhelmingly supported the Australia-first ban on commercially bottled water, already agreed to by businesses in the town.

Local businessman and Bundy on Tap organiser Huw Kingston said almost 400 people turned up to the Bundanoon Memorial Hall, with only two casting dissenting votes.

The voluntary ban has been triggered by concerns about the carbon footprint associated with bottling and transporting the water.

And if Pen & Teller Bullsh1t is right it's also worse for you than normal tap (at least in more US cities)... even so last I checked I drank water out the tap in primary and secondary school and i'm sure it's the reason I developed a healthy immune system (WASA water is MESS) so if we can survive that WTF we need bottle crap at a price premium for?

Yeah the real reason we pay for bottled water is for convenience and it has a very high price both economic and social.....even for us here in Trinidad a simple water filter and some reusable bottles would be enough

I really don't trust wasa water. I have family who worked there and they all drank bottled water after seeing the operations. lol

The price for it is highway robbery. Better to get the 5 gallon for $30.00 than to pay $5 for a 1 litre of water. steups

Yeah and not to mention it cheaper than buying the bottled water. I always wonder how well our local bottled water companies such as Blue Waters handle water quality.

The bottled water is definitely devoid of taste, as it should be.

I'm not sure how the bottled water itself could be more harmful than the one that comes out of the tap though. Ever full a bottle of water directly from the tap? The damn water does look like MILK for a few seconds then it fizzes and turns clear. I drink that on a regular, but that doesnt seem right to me. Yes, some taps make the water bubbly as it comes out and it appears to be carbonated, but im not talking abaout that. Im talking about the water is white and like smoke comes off the top of it for a few seconds and u can actually smell and taste the chlorine. Blehhhh.

In the office we have free blue waters water so I drink my arse full. Home is regular government jiuce ftmfw. I get kinna spoil though that sometimes I does feel for the fresh crisp taste of the bottled water while away from the office, so I buy a bottle. When things get REAL bad with wasa (like brown water and such) is a 2l bottle does get full in the office to carry home. Not to mention a litre or two of small bottles in case of emergency.

Oh and noob, its $5 for a HALF litre.

Thank god it's not like that here at home, water looks crystal clear when it comes out from the tap most of the time, there's no overbearing chlorine scent, and it tastes better than most bottled water products I've tried...and that's without any filtration system or anything as such on my premises. That's one of the benefits in living somewhere where pollution hasn't spoiled the water supply before treatment.

LOL ent? Middle of the city is where i'm at. We supposed to be getting water from a savannah well...which I highly doubt. Now when the water has a few seconds to settle, its clear and everything eh, but its just that fizz that concerns me. There's also definitely a taste...which shouldnt be. SPK, you lucky. I could be halfway on my way to a slow chlorine poisoning.

Hmm in Woodbrook I notice the water has a nice brown texture to it at times, free mauby I say, loaded with mineral goodness :)

Close enough, given how some ppl tend to react. :D

But yeah, the water supply I get is from Hollis reservoir, and there has not much the treatment plant to mess up the water. Only when they have to do repairs, or when they turn back on the water after a serious amount of rain, then we get the overbearing amount of chlorine in the supply. On most days though, it's pleasant to drink straight from the tap, and in some cases, it's cold enough as well!

Definitely, when I have to drink water down that side, it feels so hard to do so...cuz the water tastes....bleah.

Worst is around UWI, when I was renting, I HAD to put Tang or mauby in the water, just to get it palatable enough to drink...and that still didn't get rid of the taste.

Glad to hear some people are getting a good clean supply of water. I draw the line if water is brown though :p
