Firefox is a memory hog??
« on: May 27, 2009, 08:25:04 PM »
Of recent, noticed firefox taking more than its fair share of memory.

See attached.

wtmc???

Is firefox this notorios a memory hog on everyone's PC? I have two extensions installed, downthemall and saveimages.

Usually have several tabs open, 10+ but still.

Got damn, it is taking up more memory than Dawn of War 2!

yes it is a memory hog

with a few tabs open mine is usually 100+ megs
dont know bout 800 megs thats a bit extreme but it is a known hog
you could also try the 64 bit version, see if that works better for you

Which is why yall need to park up that inferior browser and use Maxthon.

Arc I really gave Maxthon a try. There are some things that I liked and some things I didn't. In the end the things that I didn't really turned me off it.

Mainly its auto form filling feature, as well as remembering passwords and password manager sucks. To me it was over complicated with features and not user friendly.

I did like having a profile so I can have my bookmarks from anywhere with a Maxthon browser installed.

I like the simplicity of Chrome. They need to have java support though.

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

Actually, I use IE8 a lot, and its rather impressive, but it still doesn't come CLOSE to Maxthon interms of features.
Still, its good as a secondary browser.

...and I use the 1st version, not Maxthon 2.

I agree with that, Chrome fast and simple. It is real fast on the netbook anyhow.

Downloaded chrome again to give it a whirl (still have Maxthon on the to do list)

Have 13 tabs in Firefox and 12 tabs in Chrome.

See the interesting results in task manager.

Firefox is managing an impressive 38% CPU utilization (check my stats on the side for the cpu it is "mannerzin") while eating a whopping 1gb of system memory. Kudos to the firefox team. No easy feat I'm sure. That has to be the mother of memory leaks.

Again, I do have three aforementioned plugins installed. Maybe one of them is the culprit.

Chrome is taking a much more modest 100mb allotment of system memory and negligible CPU power.

Though, in three separate processes. I noticed Internet Explorer also takes this approach. Though you have only one browser open, you see several Internet Explorer processes running in Task Manager. Not sure why, but it seems to be more efficient than Firefox's single process method.

hi noob, what version you running there?

I also came across http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions where Downthemall is listed.

I've been searching for "memory leak firefox" and came across a few hits that blame FF itself, and then some say the extension
