Imagine you get knocked by almost everyone for having a product that sucks as much as if not MORE than a 2$... well you get the idea...

Microsoft, analysts tell companies to kill Vista plans
Yank Vista plans if switching to Windows 7 won't delay things too long, Gartner advises
Gregg Keizer

Click here to find out more!

May 15, 2009 (Computerworld) The Microsoft executive in charge of Windows urged some companies this week to dump Vista deployment plans and shift to Windows 7, the operating system the company has promised to ship in the fourth quarter.

"If you're just starting your testing of Vista, with the [Windows 7] Release Candidate and the quality of that offering, I would switch over and do your testing on the [Windows 7] Release Candidate, and use that going forward," Bill Veghte, Microsoft's senior vice president for Windows business, said in a keynote speech earlier this week.

That same day, other Microsoft managers said work on Windows 7 should wrap up in August, which would indicate availability on new PCs and at retail stores as early as mid-October if the company uses the same pace as Windows XP eight years ago.

Microsoft delivered Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) to the public on May 4, but made it available to developers and IT professionals several days earlier.

Veghte's advice to abandon Vista didn't come as a surprise to Michael Silver, a Gartner analyst who tracks Microsoft. Silver and Gartner colleague Stephen Kleynhans said the same thing in a research note released on Wednesday.

"If they haven't started, certainly they should move right to Windows 7," said Silver today. "But the bigger question is what do those in the middle of planning do? Should they continue with Vista?"

The answer, Silver said, depends on where in the Vista planning and deployment process a company is. "If they started deployment, and are deploying Vista only on new machines as they buy them, then I'd continue. But if they aren't quite there yet, then we recommend switching to Windows 7." Gartner's rule of thumb, Silver continued, is that if dumping Vista for Windows 7 will delay deployment plans by six months or less, then Windows 7 is the right move. "And for anyone looking to skip some version of Windows, Vista is the better one to skip," said Silver.

Because the bulk of corporate PCs continue to run Windows XP, and because more than half of the enterprises surveyed by Gartner plan to skip Vista, Windows 7 becomes the de facto choice for the future, Silver argued. And it will have to be sooner rather than later, since a major deadline is staring XP users in the face.

In April 2014, Microsoft will drop all support for Windows XP, putting a stop to security patches. "That's effectively the end-date for XP," Silver said. "But a lot of [software developers], if they're writing a new product or updating [an existing product], they're not going to be supporting XP even that long."

Businesses should figure on leaving Windows XP no later than the end of 2012, he added. "That means that if they start Windows 7 deployment in January 2011, as we think many will, they'll have nearly two years to upgrade, and a 16-month cushion until XP support ends in case they have problems or delays," Silver said.

But was this week's advice by Microsoft's Veghte a red-letter day, the implicit admission that Vista was a failure in the enterprise? "Oh, I think they admitted that a while ago," Silver said, pointing to comments by CEO Steve Ballmer last October during a Gartner symposium refereed by Silver and fellow analyst Neil MacDonald.

"If people want to wait [for Windows 7], they certainly can," Ballmer said then. Earlier in a question-and-answer, Ballmer had said Windows 7 was simply "Vista, a lot better."

"They've been coming to terms with Vista's [failure] long before this," Silver said today.

Microsoft has not yet named a ship date for Windows 7, or disclosed pricing for the various versions. Like Vista, Windows 7 will feature an Enterprise edition that is available only to customers with Software Assurance, the Microsoft program that gives large customers the rights to any updates to a particular product in return for a annual payment.

Time names Vista in top ten pants product
Beats Microsoft Bob
By Nick Farrell
Monday, 18 May 2009, 11:19

TIME MAGAZINE, which is more famous for its man or woman of the year competition, has named Vista as one of its top ten pants IT products of all time.

The US weekly says that Vista was created to improve the security of the most widely used PC operating system in the world.

However its security features were not much better than Windows XP and it was not compatible with older PCs, which limited the number of users who were likely to upgrade, Time said.

Vista appeared to run slower than XP and the operating system has never managed to get more than 24 per cent of the market.

Time observed that even the more positive reviewers said that the OS was nice to have but unnecessary. The net result was that Vista hurt the Vole's bottom line as its top customers stayed with XP in droves

you know

alot of the people that bad talk vista, do so just because its the in thing to do

the thing that makes vista at this point most pants worthy is it UAT and with it off, its not that bad, atleast the 64bit ultimate version roxx for our uses.

I think microsoft never played up its strengths and let the goats make noise all over their product
and anyone calling it worst MS product or worse IT product has no idea what they are talking about.

Well crixx you are right and wrong here. It's NOT the WORST product they ever produced. As far as OSes go ME was the worst... (they do have other horrible products we won't delve into). However as a person IN IT, Vista is still pants (I use x64 version and I have my own quams with it... if NOT for DX10 eh!)

Microsoft pretty much promised the sun the moon and the stars with Vista and it sadly sadly disappointed us all. For one they claimed that it would run faster than xp on the same specs, which just was not the case. We then had a situation here people believed that, ran and bought Vista (or bought machines that were originally designed for XP but just received a fresh sticker before being sold) and the $hit hit the fan. With any new OS, there are going to be teething problems. If you think Windows 7 will be a seamless upgrade, you've got another think coming.

So apart from the buggyness that was the original Vista sans SP1, the majority of machines running Vista weren't speccd enough to run it so it ran slow and this is the major part of why it was not very warmly recieved. Notice how much attention they paid to in making sure that Windows 7 runs even better than Vista on the same hardware?

The truth is, though, Vista has now begun maturing and many of the initial problems are solved. Paired with a machine of decent specs, I consider it to be even faster and more robust than XP ever was. It just cant be run on weak hardware, which a lot of PC users are running on.

i remember the horrible driver support when xp was released
but i took it anyway just to get away from ME at the time and vista really does perform very well on good hardware, enabling us to actually utilising better and better hardware, but the fad is to bad talk vista for no particular reason, so meh.

I really have to disagree with you there hoss. An OS is a resource manager, NOT a program. If u mean an OS is software then yes it is. But truly it is supposed to be a medium b/w hardware and software. Thus, an OS that takes up more resources than the software it manages.....I call that a program; distinct and separate from an OS but with similar functionality.

thats very old thinking of what an OS is or is supposed to be.
We have long since moved on from being a mere resource manager, we expect our OS to manage or prints and handle networking and all sorts of layers of programs that we take for granted now.
Sure you can get , because there still are bare bones OS's that just manage resources and you have to add all the other functionality you want, but in these times, an OS is expected to be a hyper functional program.

I could have sworn I posted here..... in this very thread in reply... yet it has disappeared. I hope this one does not as well. As I said, if your OS is more resource hungry than your apps (and let's use a formidable app like say a game.. Crysis anyone?) and the OS still requires much more resources than the programs it runs, then you either have a VERY efficient program or a BLOATED OS. Vista is definitely the latter. Otherwise what's the excuse for such an increase in resource requirements over XP? Mac OS X has been able to maintain and in some cases even REDUCE the requirements of sucessive releases and it STILL has an interface to put Vista in the dark. So what has MS really done with OS? and then there are the broken promises, the largest imho being NFS which was supposed to have debuted with Vista but has mysteriously vanished out of existence. Compare the aged format we've been using NTFS vs. Sun' ZFS and you can see MS hasn't been delivering what it is they wanted ppl to believe. And thus why the adoption rate of Vista is horrific and why Windows 7 is being pushed out so quickly. Vista == ME 2

vista cannot = ME2

ME has failed from start to finish, never at any point did it become a good program, it offered no benefits and was quickly swept under the rug.

The average person who belittles Vista had no idea about the promises of NFS or any expectations for that matter, poor marketing is mostly to blame for the world wide vista hate, because it is a good OS! gamers are very snarky people about their software and look how many of us have eventually taken the plunge into 64bit Vista and have not look back, i honestly have no need to go back to XP at this point. When Xp came out people were whining about its bugs and comparing it to 2000 and thought it wasnt a serious enuff OS and then over time, it became the most beloved Windows OS. Yes its bloated, largely because it tried so hard to be overly pretty for no reason, but it also forced alot of adopters to get better hardware, and once you have good hardware, you dont even feel the bloat!! I think MS should have changed their marketing, pushed Vista Ultimate and continued with XP sales, so people would get the best of both worlds, the best 32 bit Windows OS and the best 64 bit Windows OS.

I remember years ago we had a big discussion about the trend the hardware vendors were taking, forcing people to adopt newer tech even when older tech still worked, and i think eventually the thought was that yes, adopting new changes and new standard will drive better products into the hands of the consumers. The change from pci to agp to pcie was one much maligned, but now at this point we except platform changes, we except dead platforms and even advice against buying perfectly working hardware that resides on dead platforms.

So kudos to MS for pushing a 64 bit OS into the main stream and getting adopters to get better and badda hardware, making it more the norm.

The ripple effect of vista  (a la 4400) is very much understated.
Yes OSX is a better and badda 64 bit OS, but it is a small market and does not drive the direction of the market.  The vendors would NOT make better hardware, if no one used an OS that could actually make use of the hardware.

The reason most ppl that go to 64-bit Vista don't look back is because it doesn't make sense. Would a gamer give up the extra eye candy with DX10 and go back to XP? no. If XP supported DX10 i'd still XP over Vista. Now Windows 7 seems to be what Vista SHOULD have been. Let's see if MS has learned its lesson.
