Indeed they are, the options and flexibility is endless, and if you couldn't be bothered with all that hoopla, no problem, buy ah steam machine and call it a day. Good times ahead for PC Gaming / HTPCs.

Ok, steam machine is cute and all. But THIS! Is COOL!

BOOM!, sign me up, that would be rely good, especially the subscription model. And if you thought steam machine was easy to manage, this thing ways, full power of a pc, full upgradability, and so easy even a cavewyatt can do it. :laughing7:

I would imagine going this route would be rather expensive compared to just using regular pc components.

Wont be expensive if u utilizing the subscription model, we just have to wait and see how the pricing works.

Yes but it will only be one manufacturer making this? Razer would need a large subscriber base to get those volumes going...

Razor currently sells alto of products, and I'm sure they've discussed the logistics of it in the board room and think they can do it, hence the CEO going public.

How they pulling off a subscription model is not my concern. The fact the man say that's what they doing is.

Apart from that, the technology itself is epic. That cooling system!!!!! Being a hardcore water enthusiast, the cooling system is very very very attractive to me. And the whole concept just cool. And it looks good too.

Once the price is right, this will do damage.

Some more perspectives from the industry on Steam OS/Machines...

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-01-07-letting-off-steam

http://www.joystiq.com/2014/01/07/editorial-steam-machines-are-nonsense-and-valve-is-cool-with-th/

I get the sense from the gaming media at large that Valve is creating a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, and I tend to agree.

The "industry" said the same thing about tablets....

It is no small challenge but as an advocate for gaming.....I for one hope they succeed!

Same thing they said for the PlayStation One controller, as well as the Atari Jaguar and Steel Battalion controllers. Some live on others didn't. (imagine playing Titan fall with this setup.) @_@

No proper D-pad...no care.

Better they jus take a borrow from SNES, PSX and done, because that design is ass.

don't think there's a requirement but anything 2Mbps and above should be good. Although if u plan to do some serious online gaming i'd recommend from 10Mbps.

What he said. You can use steam with a 56k modem if you wanted.

However. It really shines with faster internet. The faster the better.

I have a 10mb and a 20mb connection

Relevant to the whole 'Steambox' discussion...

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/can-we-build-a-gaming-pc-on-a-console-budget/1100-6418829/

"As it turns out, you can build a gaming PC for around the cost of an Xbox One that will outperform both next-gen consoles given the current stock of cross-platform games. You'll also enjoy a massive library that neither the PlayStation 4 nor the Xbox One will ever be able to match from a pure numbers standpoint. Plus, your PC is upgradable, and its functionality in non-gaming areas only adds to its value. AMD has an advantage when it comes to the balance of price and performance on the low end, but there's nothing stopping you from mixing and matching components from different manufacturers, which very well might be the best plan if you've got a larger budget to work with.

Keep in mind, too, that current cross-platform games on consoles perform best on a PlayStation 4, which currently sells for $100 less than an Xbox One. If you were to try to build a gaming PC for $400 to $450, our experience has taught us that you would end up with a machine that can't compete with either next-gen console. Though we both succeeded in our goal, $550 was proved quite limiting when it came to picking components.

Totally agreed.

Costs even less if you use the trading grounds.

I managed to put together mine for under US$300.00 with second hand parts.
