considering there is absolutely no loss of fidelity in re-selling a "used" downloaded game.

Can't see how the judges ruled in favour of that.

It will totally dissuade developers from producing single player gamers.

As they can only leverage multiplayer access as a tool to prevent a "used" downloaded game from being as valuable as a brand new copy.

Considering the price we pay for digital games nowadays, I really don't think this is a step in the right direction for the industry. Games are cheap enough now as is.

Opening that grey market can only hurt.

A few years ago I wouldve disagreed with you heartily.

Now im inclined to agree, looking at the work being put into some games, and the lackluster sales, and the insane price drops, Im seeing this more harming the industry that helping.

I would certainly like the opportunity to get rid of games I no longer want for 'a small money', or buy a game from someone who doesn't
want it again for the same 'small money'.

Like allyuh forget the value of money all of a sudden?
Keep in mind with Steam's/Origin's current arrangement, you don't officially own the games eh...you just kinda renting em.

This decision gives back a little power to the consumer.

Maybe it will force devs/pubs to put out better games.  Who knows.

I hear both sides of the and I am inclinedto say power to us the consumer! Imho all it means is that the game devs need to come up a reasonable cut from the resold games, a small % and fixed process for second hand games.
So for eg, if I wanted to sell my blops on steam, it will have a fixed resale price of say $18 with say $5 to activision so I get 13. I say that fair  enough. Dlc however maintains full market price with a 50/50 split between u and game dev, reason you don't want to promote ppl buying just to sell.

when we resell a car, the car companies dont get a cut...

if we resell a house, the previous sellers dont get a cut etc...

i could understand steam getting a cut though since they are essentially the brokers/transporters etc...

Im all for power to the consumer. Id personally love to sell games Ive beaten, or bought on impulse, BUT, we don't live in a vacuum. A decision like this will have consequences if not measured. Given the current state of the industry, and insane dips in prices some games are already getting,(after pouring millions of dollars for diminishing returns)  a decision like this could end up doing the total opposite of what we want.

EA Labels head Frank Gibeau had a very straightforward conversation with GamesIndustry International recently where he talked about the future of publishing, and how going all-digital is an inevitability for his company.

“It’s in the near future. It’s coming,” he said.

“We have a clear line of sight on it and we’re excited about it. Retail is a great channel for us. We have great relationships with our partners there. At the same time, the ultimate relationship is the connection that we have with the gamer. If the gamer wants to get the game through a digital download and that’s the best way for them to get it, that’s what we’re going to do.”

It should be noted however that the next generation Xbox and Playstation are expected to continue to support physical discs, despite rumors to the contrary. The already announced WiiU is doing the same.

Going all-digital is what most publishers dream of, as it allows them to cut out the middleman of retail chains entirely. No more Gamestop or Best Buy to take a cut, no more materials and shipping costs, and that money will go directly into their pockets.

Agreed...if the transaction happens through Steam, then of course they should get a cut.
The game devs/pubs already made their money off the initial sale, and should not see a cent more.

I have always said: make your game compelling and worthy enough to warrant that brand-new purchase,
and stop the nickel-and-diming DLC bulls#1t, and gamers will flock to it in droves, and MAKE it profitable.

That's not true, you buy parts no? You maintain your vehicle (maybe original like myself), are those sales not counting towards their bottom line? Its the same concept, for them to continue to support the game, issue bug fixes, provide you with forums and freebies is that not worth a value as well? (now not talking about dlc). What about continued marketing to increase the player bar and thus your online experience where applicable? And sure steam could get a cut commensurate with their input.

I could NEVER advocate spending more and more money.

You seem to conveniently sidestep the fact that people's income not rising as quickly as the cost of everything else.

I  fully support any measure that allow gamers to increase their  buying power.

The industry needs to change the way they do business.  Plain and simple.  Good games sell themselves.  All that ridiculous spending on marketing is the real problem.

Not all of us have the means to spend money on every Super Hyper Ultimate Arcade Collector's Edition as you are wont to do,  in the name of 'support'.   It's ridiculous, and it has to stop.

But Arc, what does your last comment have to do with our ability to sell a 2nd hard game and the devs get a cut? a 2nd hand game sale will be CHEAPER than a new sale (so it's NOT costing the seller MORE) and giving the devs a cut at least HELPS with what wyatt was explaining... so I don't see ur point about our income vs a RESALE?
