market forces will smooth things out over time.

I'm not saying to run out and buy every game for the sake of it.

I AM saying to buy the games YOU like and support the developers.

Thanks to services like STEAM, it is down right affordable to do.

By and large, gamers have gotten on board with the concept. I have seen many people boast of large video game collections on this very forum.

well done!

mission accomplished.

I'll give you a recent example arc. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine. Beautiful game. Paid maybe us$40 or less. I've seen it going for like $29.95

I love warhammer and have bought many variants of it over the years. Each time getting my money's worth.

You know how much I paid for games 20 years ago? TT$600.00 (on my super nes)

Today, I'm paying US$30 - $40 on steam. (TT$180 - TT$256.00)

For TOP rated, A class games.

Consider inflation over the past 20 years, that is MASSIVE price drop.

And my income on the other hand has risen exponentially.

I don't think we are on the losing end of this equation at all. Games have gotten much cheaper in recent years.

It's relevant to the overall discussion W1nTry, because all those different editions of a single game adds/subtracts value from each other in the event you're actually able to resell it.
If you have the Super Edition, and then the Super Hyper Edition drops, then guess what...the resale value of your Super Edition just tanked.

...and the dev/pub should STILL get a 'cut' after they just screwed your resale value?   BOLLOCKS!!!

*imitates Soup-Nazi*  'NO cut for you!'

hahaha

Well from what we've seen, DLC is here to stay.

Wouldn't hold my breath on that "version-ing" going away.

Battlefield -> Battlefield Vietnam

Magicka -> Magicka Vietnam

Super Street Fighter IV -> Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition

and the list continues.

why should the game devs get a cut doh?

when we resell a car, the car companies dont get a cut...

if we resell a house, the previous sellers dont get a cut etc...

i could understand steam getting a cut though since they are essentially the brokers/transporters etc...

That's not true, you buy parts no? You maintain your vehicle (maybe original like myself), are those sales not counting towards their bottom line? Its the same concept, for them to continue to support the game, issue bug fixes, provide you with forums and freebies is that not worth a value as well? (now not talking about dlc). What about continued marketing to increase the player bar and thus your online experience where applicable? And sure steam could get a cut commensurate with their input.

Sent from my MB865 using Tapatalk 2

really.. how can you liken selling a used game to buying extra parts?? its two totally different concepts...

the person that buys the used car will still be going to the dealer for parts no?

the point is, that when i sell the car, with whatever i have in it.. the dealer does NOT get a cut of MY money.. i'm trying to re-coup as much cost as i can... the onus is on the new owner to maintain the car through the dealer where the dealer will rightfully make a profit.

now liken it to digital game... game is release.. i buy it, beat it, sell it at a lower cost... the new owner can still dl all the dlc's they want to give the dev some profit.

but once the game leaves the developer hands, they have turned their sale profit... they can still extend the lifetime of that profit by releasing good dlcs and in app purchasing...

by your logic game devs should then say to hell with the consumer and forget bug fixes, etc cause the made their only profit so why should they care after?

and toyota shouldnt recall faulty vehicles?

cmon man.. ur going down the wrong logical path here.. bug fixes help to fix problems that exist upon manufactur.. that is the same as cars being recalled for some faulty problem.... or owners being given some sort of compensation... when you buy a game/car you expect that it function properly.. bugs mean that the dev did not live up to their end of the bargain and work needs to be done

DLC's are what devs are not obligated to do, which is why they should rightfully get paid for that extra work

used to be the DLC was free and expected for games.

Oh how I miss those days.

Free maps, free patches with additional content. New playable characters.

Now, you get nickel and dimed for every little thing in games.

Just now you'll get the first hundred bullets free and have to pay for ammo thereafter.

Valve is crowdsourcing the approval process for its Steam distribution platform, it said today.

With a new service the company is calling Steam Greenlight, slated to launch at the end of August, Valve will allow gamers to vote on which titles will make it to the popular digital network. Instead of going through some sort of mysterious, behind-the-scenes approval process, independent games will now be placed on the Greenlight service, where users can vote to approve them for distribution on Steam

not sure why though?

Has there been some issue with games making it to steam in the past that I am not aware of?

Could be a multiple front attack:

1) If users aren't buying the games we choose, let them choose the games and they should buy it
2) Tie users into steam more, Origin, offers origin games and GameStop offers a wider variety, but now on Steam you get to choose the guys that are offered to you
3) Easier to pick out patterns of what users what if they come right out and tell you what they want
4) Dont have to use resources on a decision making body
Cooler Master CM690 II
Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0 w/ CoolerMaster Hyper 212
ATI Radeon HD 5870
6GB Corsair XMS2
Seagate 500GB HDD x2

I have not referred to an 'extra' part yet, I am talking about maintenance (brakes, shocks, springs, etc) parts that are good (no Toyota defects) that you buy from the manufacturer because the after market might be Ish, how is that not giving more money to the car maker after you buy the car? And THAT is the comparison I Drew. You wear down parts you replace them, you playing games online and ppl  think done class or gun or car OP so they Nerf it, not that it's defective, but they do it anyway (wow is the MOST renown for this, they Nerf every class at some point but that another rant altogether). Basically you're saying if it's not 110% ready at launch date it's 'defective', to which I ask how do you prepare for ALL problems under the sun possible? Answer it's impossible. So the servers that you sweating on (where applicable) don't need money for maintenance? The patches to online exploits since ur servers are visible worldwide don't require money to fix? Ludicrous

And as for the versions making your own depreciate, how do? Would the gold Ed not sell for more second hand? If you but the cheap version do you not expect that it will resell for less? If you buy a ford focus and u buy the svt model is mine not worth more than yours? How id this again relevant to second hand sales? will ppl not but my cheaper 2nd hand over the omgitsshiny version because it's cheaper?

I like the comparison Wyatt Drew, we paid allot more for the Same or less back in the day but men think they getting rob if u give a lil $ to the Dev in a resale but fine if it given to say steam? No wonder EA launched origin, at least that way they are both dev AND platform they could get SOMETHING IF it ever went down that road
