Valve shows their controller.......awesome looking. i love the troll they give to the troll question (or legit depending how stupid the poster is)
I’m a happy Steam customer happily using my happy mouse and keyboard. I don’t want a controller?
You can’t make a sentence into a question by just putting a question-mark at the end. But we’re happy you’re happy, and by all means keep using whatever input method makes sense for you. Rest assured, we won’t abandon you. We love mice and keyboards, too.

I am mystified by the button layout on that controller.

So...it seems like the 'Piston' is still a 'thing'.  http://kotaku.com/well-learn-more-about-the-piston-living-room-pc-on-m-1414219833

At that price though.....?  I dunno.
You can get a LOT of PC for 1000 US now.  All standard stuff too...nothing proprietary.

I think Xi3 setting themselves up for failure...ESPECIALLY if this doesn't turn out to be one of the 'Steam Machines'.

Yeah, that won't do well against a $399 next gen console. One can buy a truck load of games with the US$600 more they are asking for the Piston. Even with a strong Valve endorsement, I don't think that will fly...at all.

People clued on to Valve and Steam are generally tech savvy and as you said....could build a far more robust machine themselves.

They NEED a starting unit that doesn't cross $499 to not be laughed out of the race for the living room.

Use a SoC chip if need be.

Target the non techies.

Else fail

...and that's just fo-fiddy.  :laughing7:

Imagine what $999 US gets you.
If a part fails, you can replace it the next day.
Not so easy with the Piston.

As is...?   No.

Add in a 200-dollar discrete GPU, and then ask that question again.

The above can qualify as a gaming-PC, but only just.  It'll handle most older titles quite well as is, albeit with medium to low settings.
Beefier titles like your Battlefields and your Crysises will need something with a little more 'bodow' so-to-speak.

You've inspired me to perform 'tests' with my HTPC, which currently has an i5 3450 and a Radeon 7750 in it.

I'll install Battlefield 3 and Crysis 3 on it and report some performance numbers.  It should give you a good guage as to what you should shoot for in terms of 'bang for buck'.
Keep an eye on my personal benchmark thread... I'll post all the results there.

http://kotaku.com/valves-first-steam-machine-prototype-is-crazy-powerful-1441267520

So for our own first prototype Steam Machine ( the one we're shipping to 300 Steam users ), we've chosen to build something special. The prototype machine is a high-end, high-performance box, built out of off-the-shelf PC parts. It is also fully upgradable, allowing any user to swap out the GPU, hard drive, CPU, even the motherboard if you really want to. Apart from the custom enclosure, anyone can go and build exactly the same machine by shopping for components and assembling it themselves. And we expect that at least a few people will do just that. (We'll also share the source CAD files for our enclosure, in case people want to replicate it as well.)

And to be clear, this design is not meant to serve the needs of all of the tens of millions of Steam users. It may, however, be the kind of machine that a significant percentage of Steam users would actually want to purchase - those who want plenty of performance in a high-end living room package. Many others would opt for machines that have been more carefully designed to cost less, or to be tiny, or super quiet, and there will be Steam Machines that fit those descriptions.

Here are the specifications for Valve's 300 prototypes.

The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components:
GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
CPU: some boxes with Intel : i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB DDR5 (GPU)
Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high

Nice, I really don't care for those Hybrid HDs would have preferred a straight SSD.

Leaving an external HD/ NAS to handle mass storage.

They could have a winner here if the price sits around that of a nextgen console (extremely wishful thinking) for an entry level box with a GTX760.

If not, a capable HTPC build will rival this for techies....and a nextgen console will beat it for non techies.

Can't wait to see how the future unfolds.

+1 for the heads up

Estimated cost to assemble the steam machine units as revealed:

The highest end possibility here, with a Titan and an i7 CPU, clocks in at around $1,850

One mid-range option, with a GTX-780 and an i5 CPU, would run you close to $1,350.

The lowest-end (of these high-end machines), using a GTX660 and an i3 CPU, could go for something like $880
