Interesting. Define 'future proof' for me nah, i lost.

Future proof refers to upgradability. If the platform will continue to be developed and new chips with improved speeds and tweaks will be manufactured. AMD pretty much has AM3 for the desktop for the next 2 years. It only debuted this year. The Intel LGA 775 aka last of the Pentium, Dual, Core, Core 2, Core 2 quad are pretty much it. Intel will not be devoting anything new to the platform save shrinks (maybe) or lower power models. It's not going to get any faster, it's a dead socket. If you buy it, whatever there is now is prolly all there will be even in 2 years.

You know, I just stumbled upon this article and read it through.  The gaming results were actually rather surprising.
It seems there is no real difference at present going from 3 cores to 4.

I wish they had done a direct comparison of all Core 2 Quads to the AMD PhII 720 BE using 3 cores at the same clockspeeds.

I still advocate: the more cores you can have for your money, the better.  Most of us use our PCs for more than gaming anyway,
so the real-world benefits of quad-core CPUs are there.

Still, kickazz article.  Could always depend on Tom's Hardware to 'bring da tech noise'.
