well right now I have $900 cash after buying this PC system...plus i have an almost new Nvidia 9400GT card for sale for $400neg. and well the biostar intel board for $300..trying to make up more cash if needed..

however if the sell wants to make a deal i could give cash, video card and or board with it all..

this was my thread earlier on the same subject, you can take a read through, some of the questions I asked and some that were asked to me would pertain to this also.

what is your PSU, brand, power rating, current rating, etc.? a manufacture link would be best.

the rez you intend to play at? if you playing at low rez (<=1280X1024) then you could get way with a 512 4850/8800GT

nope i want something "bess" the lowest im going is ATi 3870

my PSU is 450W i cant remember what brand right now and also i am planning to get a 1600W or a 750W something soon...

Also i dont play games on my PC...games are strictly for my PS3...but i still want to be able to pelt on some good game whenever i come across one that isnt on my ps3 console

a 750 is wayyyy overkill for your system. much less the 1600.

a good 450w is all you need, my dad's q66,2gb, and my current 88gt are powered by a corsair 450VX easily.

i would say a 550W for future upgrades in your rig should be enough.

^^^ Nephilim, overkill?? i'm using MSI's latest board you know the 790FX-GD70 not the biostar...not sure if thats what you thinking? and thanks alot i'd check that now...i'm waiting for a contact from that person if they want the board though

790FX... nice.. but yeah a good card such as a 4870 will run you more than that buddy. I would suggest you also consider a 4770 or the GTX260 (yeah I know you have Xfire mobo, but the prices on those GTX260's ARE REALLY tempting).

im on an OC q94, 4gb ram, 8800OC'ed, 5 hdds, 8 fans, and my hx520 (520W) still chugging alone, and according to ramguy and corsair tech support, i could throw in up to a 4890 in that and the psu will still run jolly.

the PSU is the most misunderstood part in most pcs. a decent 500W psu will run your system just fine, is your hdds, v/c and cpu that will tax it, your mobo by comparison hardly takes any power for itself, pushing it i would say a 70W for itself, the rest is to feed your parts.

notice only the sli and xfire setups even reaching near the 600W mark.

your system isn't anywhere near those specs so a lower end (and by extension cheaper) psu will be more than enough for you.

you can use corsair's psu calculator on their site to see what kinda PSU you would need.

hell you can even go on their forums and ask RAMguy himself or even email them, very helpful company.

WRT the card, w1nny point out the 4770 which comming out this month early next month should be 100USD card with nice performance and low pwr needs, if you can wait a while that would be another great option. hell get 4 and xfire

Keep in mind however that MOST PSUs don't run even as high as 75% effecient. Many 'brand name' PSU boast 80% certified. Also things like Active PFC (Power Factor Correcton) all contribute towards how stable the supply of power is. A 520W generic PSU cannot and WILL NOT deliver 500W continous clean power to a system and hence why ppl go with higher and larger PSUs for SLI and Xfire setups. I have an OCZ GamerX 750W PSU that has Active PFC and 80% certified (SLI etc. Especially in T&T I cannot and would NOT recommend a PSU without Active PFC.

Just a heads up PFC refers the the relative inductance capacitance and impedence on a line. The imaginary i in math or sq rt  of (-1) comes into a very REAL part of power calculations and thus PFC is that effort by us restricted in the real world to keep the imaginary power as close to 1 as possible or somethign to that effect, sorry it's been a while since EE20A XD. That aside, the goal is to reach a PF of 1 aka CLEAN power. T&TEC distro system ain't that clean so I would advise getting a good PSU with the recommended features.

That being said a 520W PSU is sufficient but just factor in the 'external' noisy suppy and Brown out prone network that is our distribution grid. Oh yeah get a UPS XD

yup your right. while i didn't reach as far as mailman in EEET, i'm pretty sure that PF of 1 is impossible. that would mean that your apparent and real power usage is the same - i.e. 100% efficiency

Just installed the 4850...doh feel like it was really worth it though....but whats the tmep a pc is suppose to really be at? cause right now my system is approx 46-50 degrees Celsius and the CPU is around 40-44 degrees celsius...is that 2 high or something?

nah if you not in AC then it normal, the ambient temps of the room plays a HUGE part in cooling.

coretemp and gpuz can be used to monitor the temps, no install and they reside in tray. join the F@H effort plix!
