« on: November 29, 2008, 10:21:41 AM »
I'm looking for a ver of ubuntu to put on my Acer one, but I also need driver support out the box, wifi networking, card reader, sound. I installed ver 8.4 but catching hell with Wifi, usb, and network drivers only sound works. it came with Linux linpus, then I installed winxp (xp lite only 230mb, but ran slow. start up time + applications= crap)
any suggestion for a ubuntu install, or any other type of destro

go back to factory first, (if it was windows)

i recommend you go with wubi here's why: you done even need a partition manager for it. It runs from windows and installs through it. In the event that it is unsatisfactory, you simply uninstall it from add/remove.

I recommend xubuntu as your install - it excels in low power computing environments. Also it comes with a host of applications meant to run on minimal resources.

Intel 945GSE Express chipset - from wiki i get that as your chipset. Drivers
Intel 82801GBM (ICH7M) I/O - your I/O controller. I assume the chipset drivers have drivers for this too but sometimes it don't.

I also need driver support out the box, wifi networking, card reader, sound.
good luck. you may want to try Fedora, if its one distro i sure i almost never have to get drives for is that. Personal experiences may vary. Also, I usually stay 1 distro behind for documentation, support, and driver reasons.

ok downloaded fedora, installed, now testing setup was painless, but again wifi is still a nightmare under linux with these acer one's, first it found my network then it stop working, from there signal at 0% and I'm next to the router, right now I'm using my lan cable, but will keep testing.

glad to hear the fedora worked for you.

you may want to try another xwindows, you can run xfce (which is what xubuntu uses) on fedora, as well as the low resource apps.

ofc if the thing doing what you want and it not that big a deal no reason not to leave it as is.

been using ubuntu via wubi for the weekend on my work laptop and home desktop

Was annoying at first that my wireless wasnt working, was gonna give up on it, then decided to plug in lan connection, downloaded the updates and bam wireless working, Been apt-getting my heart awaysince. Must admit iam really really loving ubuntu hardy heron.

Two big projects left for me are getting pcmcia evdo card to work. Found a linux driver on novatel site, need some ndiswrapping to get it to work.

And secondly is installing office 2k7 via wine and joining lappy to AD domain at work.
If i succeed, then ill just need remote desktop and some other lil apps (adobe and some image program) to work
and *sigh* an easy way to traverse the file servers and i think id be set.
