plix to halp choose new v/card
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:56:40 AM »
So in the next month or so i'll be upgrading my card and I R between a pickle and a hard place

with the card market having more options than a pedophile in disney land i've narrowes it down a bit.

On the one hand we have the awesomenes of the HD4870, but ATI drivers never like me and i still hear horror stories from time to time. Never had a probs with nvidia.

the 260 supposedly uses less power also as i'm trying to avoid upgrading me PSU until im ready for the i7 jump sometime next year

just wanna get some opinions.

If you had 200USD or so to get a card what would you get?

comments? suggestions?

EDIT.

these are what i was looking at

bfg maxcore 260
sapphire hd4870

SPECS:

GA-EP35-DSR3
Q9400 (en route)
4x1GB kingston hyperx
hx520 corsair
4 hdds

through corsair forums and via emails i've been assured that the 4870/260 should run within the limits of my PSU (close to about 475W consumption total on the system)

First of all...what PSU do you currently have?

A complete list of system specs would help a great deal as well.

You know me, whichever performs better at the said pricepoint is the one for me.
The HD4870 1GB would be the clear choice at 200 US.

If power consumption is a real concern however, then the GTX 260 Core 216 is your best bet, although if you buying that one
from Tigerdirect, you have to add about 10 US shipping to Miami, and taxes too.

...and look Anadtech post up a Spring 2009 Video-card buyers guide here.

Makes for some interesting reading.

...and yeah, that PSU will run the 4870 once you dont plan on overclocking it.

Go with the HD4870 1gig. It will definitely keep you happy for at least the end of the year.

actually your card is worth holding for a little while longer....  until the next cards come out and the prices drop again...

ATI is only having driver issues with CrossfireX setups at the moment, like the problem I described here.
Incidentally, now that I've reinstalled Vista, this problem no longer occurs.

Single GPU setups run just fine.
