FLOW Internet killing network... (not really but read the post)
« on: September 15, 2008, 02:30:06 AM »
Ok so I haave the 6mb Flow connection.

The problem I got is if I start a download where that particular download is using FULL bandwidth speed, i.e. maxing out my connection. Nothing else on the network can use the internet... Not even new connections on the same pc.
Anything internet related ceases to function whilst that download enjoys maximum speeds.

This ismost problematic on ps3. If I start a download from the Playstation Store...
I can't queue anything else to download as it just can't connect to the PS Store. I then have to exit the store, pause the download then reenter, start another, exit, pause, renenter, , start another, and on and on and on... DO you know how annoying that is when the store gets updated with 10+ things u want to download?

The next thing is that whilst something is downloading, I get signed out of the network, cuz no bandwidth is being shared with the PSN network connection...

THe most annoying situation yet is tonight trying to get a MGS4 update for the online service.
IT JUST WON'T DOWNLOAD.
You need to be signed into the PSN for it to download.
I start it...download runs at full speed... Signs me out of network....
Update download fails...
Restart update...fail....restart....fail..re..fail...

So question...Is there anyway to have the internet be shared???!?!?

what kind of router do you have? depending on which one you should be able to apply qos (quality of service). Essentially, giving priority to other traffic. could be based on port or device.

apprentice now is the time to install dd-wrt on that wlrouter, dd-wrt has one of the best QoS services.

^I thought it would be with that QoS thing...

Ummm here's my QoS settings page..

What should I do here?

THe router is Linksys WRT300N, and Slaming, if its necessary I install that firmware to solve the issue well I just might do it..

yeah dude the linksys one is kind of limited, wish they had included the q0s to mac address that would of been simpler, the tab with applications are there any other options from the drop down list, if not you will have to limit the bandwidth according to the apps you use. so change the priority of the apps which use use to dl your stuff i.e. torrents, p2p to low, and give http/ftp the a high priority. Wish i had a linksys right now i would be able to give you a more detailed guide.

the drop down bar did have MAC address as an option...

So by inputting say my PS3 Mac address and setting the priority to medium...
It'll properly balance the bandwidth?

And do the same for the PC's...set to medium?

you will have to test it out try out each setting and see how they work, set up both your pc and ps3 then start a dl on one then try doing some thing bandwidth intensive on the other. Go through this sequence till you find a setting that works best, don't forget to take other devices or pcs that may connect to your network into consideration.

Well I tested it mainly with the PS3 as thats my main concern...
The pc's could wait so to speak...

I put priority highest on the ps3 mac address..and the same problem ensues...
The download grabbing all bandwidth, getting kicked off the playstation network, and not being able to start any other downloads...

lol I have absolutely no problem with necroposts.

ummm...Well ever since Flow upgraded us to 10mb, its been a situation of more bandwidth than the servers are offering.
So the PS3 for example downloads at speeds of roughly the 6mb connection.

Therefore the additional bandwidth runs fine.

When I'm downloading from a server on the pc that is giving me full 10mb speeds (1250kb/s) then the problem still occurs.
But then its not so often that I do get full 10mb down speeds, so the problem isn't a big deal anymore.
