To buy a NetBook
« on: January 14, 2009, 08:33:22 PM »
After a few days of using a borrowed Asus EEE 7" laptop at my new job (thanks splitz!  :happy7:), I've decided that a netbook is an essential tool

To get to the point:

Which to buy?

Asus:
http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=2303&l1=24&l2=164&l3=0&l4=0

MSI:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=582&prod_no=1474

or Samsung:
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/features.do?group=computersperipherals&type=mobilecomputing&subtype=netbook&model_cd=NP-NC10-KA02US

Reply with reasons and links. I'm looking to order this by next week.

MSI Wind FTW

Reasons:

 - Its *Arcman Approved* :icon_thumleft:

 - I have one...and it BOSSSS

 - Its cheaper than the other two by about 50 US (which you can use to upgrade RAM, and buy a nice case)

 - Wireless-N, as opposed to the others having only wireless-G

 - STELLAR keyboard

 - 4-in-1 card reader, as opposed to 3-in-1 with the other two (only an issue if you use Sony cards)

...and well, you've seen it, and the Asus, so you know what you're getting.

I just looked up the Wind U115 Hybrid Version, and saw that it has a different Intel® Atom™ Z530 1.6GHz Processor.

And after looking thru the Intel® System Controller Hub US15W Chipset Spec Sheet, I noticed that it can recognise up to 1GB! I mean I LOVE the low power ability of that chipset, hence the 12 hour claimed battery power, but geeze, why inhibit the RAM  ...although they clearly state on their Spec. list that it would support up to 2GB of RAM.

I see that neither the Wind U120 nor the Wind U120H use this chipset. they are using the familiar 945GSE Chipset.

I would really have to be convinced that the U115 Hybrid Version can handle the 2GB RAM, cuz I NOT using less than that with XP far less Vista/W7!

That Hybrid Drive has me sold!! And could possibly be my next option of Netbook after I get fed up with my 1000H.  :happy0203: :happy0203:

Check the Drive configuration options;

1. 120GB / 160GB 2.5" SATA HDD
2. 8GB/16GB SSD

This definately is the way to the future (for cheap netbooks anyways)

From MSI's Wind U115 Product Detail
Quote

- The World's First Hybrid Storage Netbook

The U115 Hybrid is equipped with MSI's Exclusive Hybrid Storage Technology; the very first notebook computer in the world that is capable of operating both SSD and HDD hard drives simultaneously, combining all the features of SSD and HDD in the U115 Hybrid for your enjoyment.

The U115 Hybrid functions primarily with the SSD system, offering a reliable, shock-absorbent, and speedy operating environment. You have the option of choosing the SSD system while operating with Windows, and selecting the HDD hard drive for file storage. The SSD system is much faster than HDD when retrieving files and it takes up less power. It is also much more shock-absorbent while riding on the train or the MRT.

Furthermore, because of the MSI Exclusive Hybrid Storage Technology, the U115 Hybrid will temporarily disconnect the HDD system while operating in “ECO on Mode”. Retrieving and storing files will all be done with the SSD system, the battery life of U115 Hybrid is about 12 hours.* The HDD system can also be activated with a few simple functions for the large storage space.
