WTB: USB GPRS/EDGE modem
« on: January 20, 2009, 11:30:16 AM »
OK, so I have a TSTT data SIM, and I need a permanent solution for true mobile internetz.
I'm currently using it in a cellphone via bluetooth, but the caveat there is that the cellphone
needs to stay charged all the time.

In short, I'm looking for a USB SIM-card adapter/modem like this one.

Does anyone know where I can get one locally?  (...and don't tell me 'that' site.  I looked.  WAAAAY overpriced)

Still overpriced.  I seeing em on ebay for about 35-45US or thereabouts.  I know it not costing nearly 400 TT to ship
one, so at 600 TT...they could keep that.

It look like ebay just might be mih hoss on this one.

I have a customer who just bought a 17" laptop for TT$15,000

Sony with Vista Home Premium 64-bit, 4GB RAM, 320GB hard drive, INTEL integrated Graphics

Said laptop is available on Amazon for just US$1200

His use for it?? typing word documents!!! Barely know how to use the damned thing.... upgraded from a PC running Windows.....98 -- with Blink working on it via USB!!

Fugger evaded my queries as to why he chose that laptop and why he didn't ask me for advice BEFORE he buy it. NO, he calls me because he says it kept asking for a "production key" (serial # for Office 2007 trial!!)

Where did he by it? Ask Arc. He ent NEVAH buying there again!!

I'm supposed to get full GPRS speeds of up to 128kbps as woodyear99 said.
I need it because using a cellphone as a modem has its drawbacks.  The bluetooth
connection, while nifty, just provides another point for signal losses, and is complicated to
set up in a pinch.  Just ask anyone who's ever had bluetooth driver issues.

Also, its to use with my MSI Wind.  Whats the point of having a nice ultraportable netbook
without a truly mobile internet solution.  EV-DO would be nice, but at $600 a month, it would broken me, and there are data caps.
The GPRS service is $150 a month unlimited, and it works pretty consistently, once you get a good signal.

So now I can whip it out anywhere and skin out de Wind and surf. :laughing7:

Tsk Tsk, ah could never understand that bout Tstt, they give you higher speeds on their EVDO service with their usual high price but then slam you with some ridiculous caps on top of that. Kinda defeats the point of having a high speed connection......I also using the GPRS @ $150, good enough for me.
