As much as reform for enforcing the nation's road regulations is needed, it still comes down to a simple thing - speed kills!

All the laws and regulations in the world won't change a thing if people don't heed them...so it starts with us, not any instruction written down somewhere that half the population may not even read before going on the road.

laws are useless unless they are properly enforced.
Strong enforcement of laws WORKS!! its not a discussion point.. it really does just work and the opposite is proportional, poor or lack of enforcement seems to encourage break down in society.

as for the guardian wow.. editor or junior editor needs to be fired for that one
parents should kick up a fuss

That's understandable, but it's also alot about the young foolish drivers that are on the roads now as well. I really do think it's time to raise the driving age. CCTV cameras on problem area can also be a simple but effective start.

It could never start with us, then the government should just say lets find other jobs for police officers because nobody should do crime. I agree with Crixx the laws are there as guidelines unless enforced.

As for raising the driving age....could solve nothing when a man could go down licensing office and spend a 500 and get his license without even getting behind the wheel for a single practice session.

So then are you saying that until Big Brother watching over your shoulder all the time, telling you not to drive at some ridiculous speed, you are gonna drive as fast as you like? Is that the society we have, that we don't have something called common sense? After those comments from you and Crixx, it would seem that is the case! IT HAS TO START WITH US!!! It's just that it's a clapping procedure - both sides are needed for it to function. If the general population ignores the law, the authorities can only do so much to try to curb it. If the general population follows the law, then it would be easier to weed out those who break it!

The least I can say is that at least no other innocent lives were taken in this tragedy. Whoever the driver was (since the newspapers are implying that Ms. Salandy was the driver) is responsible for this senseless loss of life.

Nah man SPK you fighting a losing battle on this one, again its not even a point of arguament.

Unless humans are managed, they will do everything under the sun, good and bad.
To say its not the governments responsibility is saying that we dont need police and social workers and armies and the like. We do, we very very much do.
I personally drive very very safely, and encourage others to do so, i mandate people wear seat belts in my car and i never speed but i know that is a drop in the pond compared to the effect that have strong enforcement has.

Iam speaking from facts and experience, in countries where the traffic laws are strictly enforced, road accidents and other related problems are dramatically lower than in places that have poor enforcement and also, working with arrive alive, i know that the percentages show that young males tend to have the most accidents but out into perspective of the actual numbers, the only reason that there are more young male accidents is cause of the higher number of young males on the roads as compared to the rest of the driving population, older males follow very very closely behind.

Older people, who have every right to know better, every excuse to show a better example, yet continue to drink and drive, speed, not wear seat belts, make improper lane changes, do not indicate, have poorly maintained cars that have broken tail, head and indicator lights are some of the other contributors to the road carnage.

I feel your sentiments about us making changes for the betterment of all, indeed i do but the truth is, what is more effective than that, is proper road management and law enforcement.

I just did some cursory fact finding on the topic and in the New York tri state area (ny nj ct)
With combined population of over 15 or so million, their road fatality statistic is at 1290.

Thats roughly 15 times our population, and wow i dont know maybe 300 or so times our size resulting in FARRR greater miles per person driven (which apparently is a major consideration in prediction of road fatalities) and their death numbers are far lower than you would expect based on our own figures.

Now i know for a fact how intense their road LAWS are followed closely by their ENFORCEMENT.
Their seat belt, anti drinking and driving and anti speeding campaigns are second to none, which, over long periods of exposure probably have a deep impact on their driving youth but for sure enforcement plays a really really big key.

You DO NOT SPEED IN NY you just dont do it,simple as that. Sure NY drivers are INSANE!! worst driving experience of my life has been driving in NY city absolutely a nightmare BUT!!! you DO NOT SPEED!! you dont even speed on the bleedy interstate between NY and NJ, not on the pike not on de mc i95 no no no dont do it!! radar plus highway patrol and state troopers uh uh do NOT do it.

Also.. they have no potholes i think thats a big deal to.

this girl was a superstar, really sorry for the to go like this.

Agree that the guardian needs to apologize for that inappropriate and insensitive headline.

Disagree with SPK, common sense isn't common (as the old people saying goes) Even the best of us do stupid things. Nothing wrong with having strong law enforcement help keep us in check.

Agree with crixx, more can be done to make the roads a safer place. Especially like the idea of parking outside a fete and doing breathalyzer tests. That's just brilliant. Probably would have saved quite a few lives in 2008 with that strategy alone.

R.I.P Giselle and I also agree with Crixx. There is a need for heavy law enforcement on our roads as it is currently non-existant so poeple readily go into jack@$$ mode when they get behind the wheel....

the outside the fete thing is done in serious parts of the world
the germans does over do that stuff, especially hiking it up alot lately since the germans seemed to have now caught unto the idea of free drinks and all inclusive fetes, some of my friends in college in germany inform me that the concept has made tons of teens come staggering out of parties, and as we all know, germany is blessed with awesome cars and awesome roads, so the authorities took it seriously when they saw the rise in drinking related accidents, instead of banning the events, they did their damn jobs and breathalysed people leaving parties.

Also, a very common practice in the states is for bartenders to take peoples keys when they leaving their institution inebriated. Ive never heard of such a thing here... no surprise why we are the way we are.

I agree we need more stringent enforcement on the roads. Automated cameras at hotspot locations and intersections would be a HUGE help in curbing people's inclinations to drive dangerously without having to find the extra manpower.

However they have that in other places, they have the state troopers patrolling like mofos, they have laws so that you can get charged with a flickin FELONY if you drive a certain level above the speed limit AND MEN STILL DO IT.

Government can only do so much in providing the framework for people to follow the laws, it's still up to each person to do so. No amount of enforcement gonna dim adrenaline of the man who figure he reaching home too slow after a fete. People will still speed, still drive dangerously and still die.

Government may be responsible for providing an overall legal framework and enforcement for the population at large, but individuals still hold responsibility for their own actions. PNM not to blame for individual accidents, that's on the driver at fault.

Iam not talking about 100% effectiveness, unless we live in a minority reportesque pre cog guided polcie force world, that wont ever happen.

But your not giving enforcement its due at all, enforcement works!!!
In places that the auto cameras are present and radar speed traps and so on and so forth, people are very very mindfull of breaking the law, because of the enforcement there are consequences to your actions, jail time, financial burden, removal of licenses and impounding of vehicles.

Enforcement on state trooper patrolled roads have become so effective that in alot of places the troopers have been scaled back because they had become so effective that people got the point and stopped their stupidness.
I really cant believe you could be so negative about such a positive thing as enforcement.

Crafting of good laws is half the battle, the other half is good/great enforcement.

Islamic states have amazing execution of the punishments of breakign their laws, they enforce very well and as such their stats are low.

Same thing in singapore, they have a massively low crime and unemployement rate and one of the major reasons for their low stats is state encouraged entrepreneurism and a absolute no nonsense approach to enforcement.
They DO NOT PLAY!!! its against the law to not flush after using public facilities and they have enforcement officials that check the stall after yu use it to make sure you flushed and flushed PROPERLY!! if you break the law, you get fined, like mega fined, if you get fined to much, lock up in yuh tail.

Enforcement WORKS!!!

still shocked by the news oui sad to see someone with so much promise die so tragically,
at the very least she did not suffer long...

Guardian headline was quite tasteless in my opinion though...
