Need some help with a dell 4700
« on: January 02, 2009, 12:22:32 AM »
A friend of mind brought a Dell 4700 PC for me to look at. The problem with this is the system is. when you boot into windows logon screen after 1 min, the pc will go into (what i believe is some kind of standby/sleep mode) where a orange light continually flashes. I'm forced to hold the power button to shut the pc off.
I have swap out the PSU, modem, memory. but the problem still persist.
The only thing that comes to mind is maybe the problem is processor related. If anyone can give me some advice on how to proceed, I'll greatly appreciate it

OH one more thing, its not a windows based problem because I booted into the bios, but this time I lasted 5 min before the pc started acting up.

Ok I don't think booting into the BIOS means that the problem is not windows related.

That sounds like a virus to me(correct me if I'm wrong) if  you get to the windows logon screen then goes limp heheh.

Try booting into windows in safe mode (can be selected after pressing F8 while pc is booting up) and see if you get into windows and it stays on in safe mode.

What anti-virus program was on the pc?

Blinking orange light usually indicates a power regulation problem, most likely due to the on board power regulation going/gone bad. Usually with the blinking orange light, the system doesnt even boot, but I guess this case is an exception. My guess is that pretty soon, that system is going to stop booting altogether. Solution would be to replace the mainboard. You can also check for swollen capacitors, although there doesnt necessarily have any present.

"My guess is that pretty soon, that system is going to stop booting altogether." well so said so done, this morning at 10:45am as a last ditch effort, I tried to replace the power supply (one last time). now the pc won't boot at all. Guess the motherboard is really dead. "RIP" Dell 4700. the good news is I can recycle the parts an build another system. don't know if the processor is any good, since most of my systems are AMD base.

Man quoting Time of Death yes....

When you say you tried to swap the power supplies.....you mean put in a regular atx power supply into your dell? O.o If so then you probably just killed the board. Theres a reason DELLs come with weak power supplies not just because uncle Mike wants to be cheap.

I would agree it could be a power regulation issue, but the Dimension 5150s had this as a general flaw with the system. If you don't NEED to use the system i say why bother with the headache of resurrection but if the machine is necessary or you'd actually like to make use of it i vote don't condemn the board just yet.

If you put back in the original PS and it even comes on try booting with no expansion cards attached. Boot with board connected to PS only (obviously u plug in the monitor so u can see =/) but take off even the mouse keyboard, anything that would draw power. But i'm sure u prob told the person its dead anyhoo and new systems are fairly cheap so...i'll end my babbling now.
