Some advice on rig Specs
« on: December 20, 2008, 12:20:59 PM »
Ok I have a little project here on advising someone on a PC that can handle Video Editing.

The individual wants me to advise them on 3 posible sets of parts(configurations) to upgrade a pc. Yes their son had a built up PC that is pretty basic so everything has to be changed.

The case is your typical full ATX case (correct me if I'm wrong) with the 4 optical drive slots etc.

So here's what I came up with for the first setup, any help with getting three configurations together would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I'm trying not to go too pricey here on the goodies so go easy on the uber parts :P

PSU: Corsair 750w TX series or PC Power & Cooling 750w

Mobo: Some type of Gigabyte not really sure of the options lol

CPU: Intel Q6600

RAM: OCZ Platinum or Gold 2-4gigs

Optical DVD Drive: Something fast, I really don't know which on is the best choice

HDD: WD Caviar 500gig

GPU: HIS 4850 512mb
Monitor: the person has a CRT that is about 15 inches but I am guessing it would be a good idea to go lcd 17-19inch for the least.

Ok so that's the basic run down of what I wanna put for each of the 3 recommendations. If I left aynthing out please let me know thanks  :happy0203:

Feel free to throw in other quality brands that are affordable. Price range I gonna be working with is around $4500 for the lowest option up to let's say $6000 for the most but you get the idea. Thanks

Ok here are my thoughts for a video editing PC:

Q6600: OK!!

Mobo: i'll leave that for other GATT men to decide.

PSU: a bit overkill unless they plan to do gaming as well.

Video Card: any 'el cheapo' 256MB card will cut it  unless they plan to do gaming on the PC as well.

RAM: OK as long as is performance RAM (4-4-4-12 timings nuh). Stick with DDR2.

DVD drive: man just stick in a DVD burner, yes... lol. but I like Pioneer as it is brand of choice for DVD duplicators.

Monitor: go dual monitor if they can afford it one time. I dunno what programs they using but i know they will benefit.

Hard Drives: I say at least 3 drives. 2 to run as RAID-0 (you will NEED the increased read/write speeds to process all them video files) and a third, larger one for backups. i can propose more elaborate scheme, but you are on a budget.

Last important question: What software are they using for video editing?
God is dead.

I want to suggest DDR2 for the person @ Rage, I aint think they need DDR3 for what they wanna do.

@ Saxman thanks for the heads up on the psu and gpu but I aint think they need so much hard drives nah, is not professionals lol. I'll suggest two at most for them.

They will be using Sony Vegas Movie Studio PLatinum and Camstasia for editing.
