Want to get on the BlackBerry...
« on: November 20, 2008, 10:26:20 AM »
Hey

I've been thinking about getting a BlackBerry with relatively cheap internet access. I know you can sign up for the BlackBerry service from tstt but what benefits does this offer over the traditional GPRS service other than "push" email? I would not mind just configuring my client to check POP3 at certain intervals instead.

Also would I be able to purchase a post paid blackberry (already on post paid now) and instead just put GPRS on my SIM or does Tstt force you to take their BB service once you buy a phone from them on Post Paid?

Nope. TSTT's Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) is totally voluntary, and no additional SIM card is needed. All the internet configuration is done on their end.
When your BB actually connects to the network, then all further configuration will take place there. (TSTT will do that).

As for the service itself, it works. That's all I'll say for now. Browsing speed is OK. Email and MSN is great. There is now even a built-in Yahoo Messenger client. Other than that, there aren't many more advantages over traditional GPRS.

So far, I'm satisfied with it.

Hmm will be looking into this, looking at the BB Bold either getting it with my current post paid from tstt or ordering it online and getting a friend to bring it down. Whichever one is cheaper.... hehe

Actually thats another point where the BIS and GPRS differs.  The BIS service is $199 TT a month...extra.
Yes, that means $199 in addition to your monthly voice charges, but considering the voice/data plans in other
countries, its actually cheaper, and TSTT does not impose a tethering restriction, so you can use your BB
as a tethered modem as much as you wish.  In a lot of other territories, you have to pay another fee for that too.

Ah ok so it is 150 per month extra for regular gprs service vs 199 month for blackberry service. Both of them though are the same speed like dialup?

The only difference being really the ability to do push email on the blackberry? Hmm I don't see the push email critical, just could setup my email client to check every half hour or so ent?

What speed you need? from what I understand the cheapest mobile service is gprs at $150 a month. It isn't very fast giving dialup speeds but is cheap and you can BT or usb to a laptop using most phones these days....

Kool as fast as it comes i suppose, i will kinda like to have remote connectivity to my office, and we know that takes some bandwidth. But i haven't done much research into each an every company. I am hoping someone, somewhere on this board was already in my boat, and need great speed at a reasonable price

Hey if anyone can help me with setting up tethered BB service on my windows pc I"d be greatly appreciative. I think I may have some settings wrong as I've been trying to piece together what's needed from varied forums for tmobile and bmobile. The BB being used is the Pearl on a Corporate plan.
