Phil's Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer
« on: November 05, 2008, 11:46:20 PM »
As the thread title says, i now own a Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer HSF.

**********************************************************************************************************************************
Why would i buy a brand new CPU cooler? --- Well i previouly owned an Arctic Freezer Pro 64 and it cooled both my 4400+ x2 chip and also my 6000+ x2 chip quite ok. Then the freak accident happened. Opening my case to let in more air, the side panel slipped on the tiled floor, knocking off the fan cage of the Arctic Freezer; THE PC WAS ON!!!. Seemingly nothing happened to it, so i just slipped it back on and decided to close the system up. Upon screwing on the side panel, i realised the fan was wobbling. I quickly turned off the system, took out the Arctic Freezer, and when i touched the fan, it came off with ease  :crybaby2:.

After that disaster, i decided it's time for a new cooler. Remembering Captain Awesome's thread in the benchmark section he mentioned his new cooler, the sunbeam core contact, so i checked it out. The reviews were great but the main reason i got this was because of its price, 45USD, that's a wicked deal for something ranked #1 and #2 on FrostyTech.com

Now this cooler is large, freakishly HUGE!! I measured my clearance around the cpu to ensure that i would at least fit the thing. When it arrived it was in awe at the true size, a picture cannot truly tell the massiveness of this b1tch.

To try and tell the size of this thing i took comparission pics, take a look....

Installing this thing was a pain in the rear, thank GOD for flat head screw drivers. Scary thing was that when installing it, i felt as if i would have broke it, but i wasn't in the mood to take out the mobo to just install this thing, when there's a will there's a way.

PICTURES OF COOLER INSTALLED:

Now for the last thing; how does it perform, and does it improve over the Arctic Freezer Pro 64? The answer is simply YES

Arctic Freezer Pro Temps

IN THE END OF IT ALL, THIS IS THE BEST COOLER YOU CAN GET FOR YOUR MONEY, NO CONTEST. THE TEMPS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.

Considering the chip i own is a Winsdor 125w 6000+ x2 @ 3.0ghz, the prescott of amd..lol, these temps are quite good for air cooling and where my pc stays. I would reccommend this cooler to anyone looking for the bang for buck solution. There's always the TRUE, but this baby right now holds the crown. Captain Awesome, if i ever see you in life, remind me to buy you a beer.

This cooler is the shizznit.

.......wow i just typed all that shizz...  :ko:

This obviously gets Captain Awesome's Seal of Approval in the category of 'Epic Win'

The fan that comes with this cooler is deserving of special mention as well because of the fact that it spins considerably faster than your standard 120mil fan resulting in some serious airflow.

Yes, it IS one huge motha but over time, you get used to the size. I like the fan clips on this one, nice and easy to get at and manipulate. Personally, I have only the top clip installed for maximum ease of removing the fan for heatsink cleaning purposes.
