Ah yes the perpetual discussion of piracy and degree of impact on the media industry. One thing is for certain, movie and music sales are probably much lower than they would be if people had no other choice but to buy them in stores. Is true when you think about it though people complain about how expensive movies/music etc. are, yet simple demand/supply would set the price and people can take it or leave it. If people voted with their wallets and it was too expensive there probably wouldn't be an industry today, and if there was one it probably would be a totally different model to what currently exists.

I'm inclined to agree (slightly) with Crixx here.  MovieTowne paid for their licenses, no problem.  If I want
to see a movie there, I will do so if I feel like.  If I want to stay home and download the same movie, once you
have no jurisdiction here, you can't tell me not to download it.  Full stop.

Piracy issues aside, Columbia 'fass an outa place' to email Flow and force them to try and scare customers.  Thats the issue here.

It would be interesting to see what the Licensing agreement is with Movietowne though, I bet there is a clause in there that GIVES jurisdiction based on the license provided to Movietowne. Anyone on here works at Movietowne or has access to the AGREEMENT/CONTRACT that Movietowne has to distribute the movies that they show?

International law is tricky, but think about it, for Movietowne to have access to the current movies, they would need to have an international agreement with the studios/production companies to distribute/show said movies, thereby granting JURISDICTION to the Foreign Companies making a stink about downloading their movies..

isnt flow pirating over 100 channels with their new cable box?

who will guard the guards? i aint condoning piracy here but isnt it an invasion of internet privacy for such a scare tactic to be used in the first place?

trying to contact flow to see if i could get a copy of the letter...

Let us know what the letter says if they allow you to see it. I am sure emails such as this have been sent in the past since so many people download a bunch of stuff. What is more important though, when last did the news report anyone from this country being charged for piracy due to illegal downloading (not sales)

Don't think I ever saw something like that before in trinidad....

Ok i called Flow again and they told me this happens to hundreds of customers....

certain movie companies track ips and send them a complaint list, no personal information is exchanged...

I was also told that basic encryption isnt enough, (DHT) and he personally uses 3 firewalls and further encryption when using his torrent app....

also im not allowed access to the email since its basically for the company, all its supposed to have however is a list of ip addresses and what was downloaded..

Lol the technician advising you on how to avoid being caught, giving you his personal tips? lol

Also I was wondering, I know everyone has their own opinion on the legality of this in Trinidad, does anyone have a link to a legal site that discusses copyright in Trinidad? Perhaps we got some lawyers on here hehe.

THREE firewalls? Why?

Would encryption make a big difference? If mean, if I open up a torrent client, I can see all the IPs of people who are connecting, and in another column I can see whether they are using encryption or not. If the C&D messages are just IP based... encryption wouldn't make a difference, granted prosecution in a criminal court might be more difficult.

That said, I'd be really surprised if anyone actually gets charged in the first place.

Buggy as hell.

first thing
columbian cant GIVE someone legal jurisdiction. Columbia is not a governing law body.

Secondly, they have NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO right to track anyones IP.
THat in itself is an infringement of the rights of users of the sites that people went to.
The encryption thing only matters since your isp isnt supposed to be keeping tabs on exactly what you are downloading.
Which makes columbias case even worse!!! because if your isp not allowed to track what you flikkin downloading, then WHO DE HELL IS COLUMBIA!!! sure isps have every right to monitor what TYPE of traffic an i.p has coming and going, but as to what actual files!! BREACHH!!!!!

The lawlessness! you dont break laws to justify catching law breakers!

Hey is there any way to reset this poll so that expiry date can be removed and poll reset. Would be cool if we could get a current poll on how much bandwidth is being used these days hehe.
