ok, (hard luck msi), I've been convinced finally to stay away from the nVidia chipsets...

Updated first post. Going to consider the P5Q-E (green???) as it seems to have slightly better features over the P5Q PRO

Stay tuned for the CPU decision next week after the next set of price cuts.

also the p5q-e has better onboard sound if you into that, and supports 16gb max memory if you think u'll ever need it

be aware the p5q-e only has 1 ps2 port (just incase ur mouse and keyboard is still ps2)

Hey guys, been awhile since I came into my own thread.

I was looking to get something like this http://www.nzxt.com/products/sentry_lx/

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Also, since I've been really busy with work and studies etc. my attention is being drawn to the ATI HD4770 as my GPU (the 8800 died a while back)

Not to mention, the brand new E8400 is sitting in it's box next to the P5Q-E and 8GB DDR2 Corsair memory. *sigh*

I even studying to get a better CPU now that almost 6 months have passed since I started planning my new rig... Q9550 or something.

And lastly, I can't get my case nowhere locally no more!!! I started off wanting the Coolermaster 590, but fell in love with the big brother, CM 690. Last one went to unforgiven a while back, and it don't look like importing it (via air freight) is cost effective. Trying to get someone to help me bring it in via ocean freight. We'll just have to see how that goes.

As far as the video card goes, I suggest the HD4850 as opposed to the 4770. Reason, it's like 10USD more... It still performs better than the 4770 (even with a decent OC). Also depending on your budget, I vouch for a Phenom X3 720 BE :) it's a HUGE step up from your 4400+ (same as me actually) and is cheaper (by a SUBSTANTIAL amount) to most of Intel's Quads (save the 8xxx series). Also the AM3 platform has some room to grow whereas the Intel LGA 775 is pretty much a dead platform now.

So you're suggesting I abandon the P5Q-E and Intel CPU, (read sell off in TG) and buy a Phenom/AM3 board?

Yup, otherwise go Core i7 or at least wait till Core i5 (read end of year). Either way you'll have to put out more money and/or time.

I'm pretty sure what you have now will satisfy current needs.  Am I right?
Why go through all that sell/buy headache again?

Core 2 Quads will get cheaper still, and you can still upgrade to that...especially when Core i5 comes out.

arc basically hit the nail on the head with respect to the upgrade question.

q84, (nerfed q94) @ <200USD yuh already exsisting parts would work nice with this, just clock that biatch to hell, if it anything like it non-nerfed cuz, then it should clock easily to 3.2 without any increase other than FSB.

Core 2 Quads will get cheaper still, and you can still upgrade to that...especially when Core i5 comes out.

2 things:
i. Dude... he's running a 8400.... if he's into sweating WOW he's ok, any current FPS (read crysis/warhead, FC2, etc) will bring it to it's knees
ii. There is something else to consider with chips. They don't ALWAYS become 'cheap as chips' Consider the following scenario -
Intel Introduces the COre i5 to it's lower and mid range line up aka Quads and better. This means they will cease and desist development and production of smaller more optimized 32-45nm Penryn based Core 2 Quads in favour of it's better Core i5. What this means is that Intel will just leave production of Core 2 Quads as is (and why shouldn't they? they still fetch a price premium) and will stop production as soon as Core i5 ramps. This means the prices of these chips will not decrease to ludicrous levels, for instance look at the Q6600, NEVER dropped below 170USD thereabouts and soon it will no long be available. The bottom line I am drawing is that he COULD invest in the LGA 775 but there is a decent probability that it will not get more affordable and it will most likely not get any better performing parts, hence DEAD PLATFORM.

My stance stays AM3 or Core i5. LGA775 isn't an option.

I must totally agree with w1n here. 775 is pretty much dead. if prices for parts have to go anywhere its up. As time goes by and the parts get harder and harder to come by, the price is gonna go up, not to mention if you start with a quad in the 775, there's not much futher you can go in terms of upgrading.

If you have a 775 system NOW, then  more than likey you're not gonna see the need to upgrade. I'd say if you dont want to spring for the i7, hold out for the i5 and if you must, go AM3 (although a good overclocked q6600 will probably beat almost all stock amd cpu's). All these platforms should be around for a while.

Ah, but the defining factor here is MONEY!!!
Its not like he DOESN'T already have the parts eh.

Tell me, if Netizen1 were to sell those 775 parts as is, would that money then
be able to purchase a capable Phenom II CPU, AM3 mobo, AND DDR3 RAM?

YES

But then i've been preaching the AMD X3 platform as a great budget gaming platform for a while. Either way LGA775 is still dead. XD

Any of the following:
GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P
MSI 790GX-G65 AM3 AMD 790GX
GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P
MSI 790FX-GD70
GIGABYTE GA-MA790FXT-UD5P

Depends on your needs. Then if you want to go even cheaper you can consider the AM2+ platform which will run AM3 chips but use DDR2 like myself. I'd recommend the AM3 though as it's more future proofed.

Dead platform or not, the performance of a LGA 775 Core 2 Quad system, paired with a killer GPU, speaks for itself.  Migrating from that to AM3, in my opinion, is a retrograde step.

I hope you have shares in AMD yes, the way you unashamedly plug their lesser performing CPUs.  Is it a coincidence that they cost less? ???

Well, I did not put it quite that bluntly and harshly, but when you're right, you're right. From a purely performance standpoint, as of this moment, AMD makes inferior CPU's. Even Intel's "old" lineup beats the majority of amd's current gen parts. Their only advantage is their platform's lower cost, which is more attractive than ever in these financial times.

I was referring to the am2+ recommendation in that post.
