Netizen1's (re)Birthed Rig
«

September 29, 2008, 10:38:10 PM »
Okay, so after years of lurkin and listening to allyuh rant and rave about scores and so on, I finally decided to put together a 'proper' rig
Current rig;
Athlon64 x2 4400 @ 2.2GHz
1GB (2x512) ValueRam
BIOSTAR NF4ST-A9 Motherboard
and finally, moved up from the Quadro FX100 to a GeForce 6600 to a GeForce 8800GS (XFX 384MB PCIe)
didn't have the stomach to run any benchies before the reinstallation, but I'm sure it would've been crap anyways. Problem is/was, I had one drive for everything, and it's always low on free space, take my word for it, that makes running any games really difficult. So I'm gonna resolve that by adding a 150GB 10K RPM Raptor (or 2)
Plus, I'm going to the Blue side, for some Core2Duo loving (E8400), an Asus P5Q, 4GB DDR2 RAM, and a new PSU just to be safe! All this goes into a
CoolerMaster Centurion case
Thing is, I'm stuck trying to decide on the RAM to get!?!? Should I lower the RAM speed for better CAS timings or stick with the faster chips? Mind you, I'm not gonna be doing any real OC'ing on this rig, at least not until the TECH-tosterone starts pumping
Looking on Amazon:
E8400
US$164.99
Either
CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB ( 2 X 2GB ) PC2-6400
(US$99.99)
-or-
OCZ OCZ2P10664GK PC2-8500 DDR2
(US$122.99)
Motherboard best price on PCMall:
Asus P5Q-E GREEN
(US$153.99)
Stay tuned for more updates and scores of course!

I'd go with the p5q-pro rather than the p5q-e due to the much more favourable reviews and the matrix raid support which will come in handy when i'm running 2x150gb 10k velociraptors in raid0 and 2x1tb 7200's in raid1. Its what i'm getting. Unfortunately Amazon doesnt carry it but luckily, Amazon is not my only supplier.
What is the default cl of the corsair? if you're not into overclocking, you're probably better off with the faster memory. Tighter timings or more speed. No one is better than the other. Speed is my personal choice, though.

Im hearing about too much funny business going down with the p5q-e. Eh able with that. Plus, im getting one more legacy pci port and the ability to run the matrix raid.
I want 10k drives. barracudas are not those.

Raptors are still the fastest single drive as far as SATA goes for Desktop PCs. Even in RAID arrays (baring Hardware RAID) the Raptors still outperform the rest.

At that level (P45) there won't be any difference in performance. Go with the cheaper one.

so the price of the P5Q GREEN dropped to US$125.99
and they brought out the P5Q PRO
http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail~dpno~7678836.asp
for US$138.99
Tell me one more thing, do I want the P5Q PRO cuz it's got two PCI-e slots (Crossfire
) or stick to the P5Q GREEN???

I can't recommend that P5Q-PRO for Crossfire. You need the P5Q-E and up for proper Crossfire.
Believe me, you're better off with the 'Green'. Funny thing though, I can't find this 'Green'
version on Asus' website.

strange?
You think I should stick to the plain vanilla P5Q since it went down in price as well?

Why can't the p5q pro give you proper crossfire?
prolly because of the 8x link when in crossfire instead of the full 16x
but i don't think that would affect him much.
