Data Recovery/Salvage Software
« on: October 21, 2008, 12:27:16 AM »
After my wonderful experience with an old dell 600m in trying restore it to health I was unable to save the data. Problem with it was that you couldn't boot into windows, it said logging in and then logged out....talk about a fustrating cycle.

Guess it was a nasty virus...

With that gone, I was wondering what programs are good that you can use to boot from cd-rom, get access to the folders etc and save your data (if you can't get to boot into windows) before wiping for a fresh install of the OS.

I only know about Norton Ghost, never used that b4.

I was wondering if there are any others?

GetDataBack for FAT/NTFS is my pick. There are other.

But you have to hook up the bad drive as a slave in another computer.

Remember there is no guarantee of success in data recovery and always have a backup

But you have to hook up the bad drive as a slave in another computer.
first thing you should try but make sure the host has decent real time malware protection.

if you are sure the drive is in good working condition, and you don't have access to another machine, then you can boot from a Linux live CD and get access to the hdd from there. You can then copy the info off to a flash or even burn it off.

if not you have to use a 3rd party recovery software like sax mentioned.

Yeah Sax I already have GetDataback, thnx.

Hmm ok so y'all saying Norton Ghost won't let me be able to boot up the pc in it's own interface to see the files and folders and copy them off? (I'm talking about if you just can't boot into windows)

It was a laptop and nothing was wrong with the HDD, it's just that I couldn't get past the damn logon screen.

Um Neph I am assuming it's the first thing on the list in that page I have to download? and there are two iso files? one for amd and one for intel?

thats the one i use, its 32 bit so it will run on pretty much anything considered recent hardware the AMD is just 64bit.
