BlackBerry Bliss
« on: September 18, 2008, 02:00:51 PM »
Over the years, the device category of PDA has continued to evolve. That's Personal Digital Assistant for the uninitiated.

Drooled over the Palm III, sold my right kidney for a Palm Vx. Loved every minute of it's existence till the untimely death by falling into the drainage area outside of Euro+.

After that came the slick P800 and P900 Sony offerings. Marrying phone and PDA functions like never before. One device to rule them all.

Next, was a short but unfortunate stint with the Windows Mobile devices (namely some HP Ipaqs). At the time, those were marred with horrible battery life and loss of data when said battery failed. Unacceptable!

Enter the BlackBerry. Bringing with it, push technology, which meant you'd constantly have an umbilical cord to your company's corporate email server. Keeping you in constant e-contact. A work-a-holic's dream. Not so good for your work-life balance, lol. All the same, these devices took the corporate market by storm for their business savvy.

Unfortunately they fell short in the consumer electronics arena where features like cameras and mp3 players were becoming standard fare on rival PDAs.

The blackberry answered this demand with the Pearl and Curve with considerable success. Two devices that attempted to capture the essence of the consumer oriented devices. They included expandable memory, integrated cameras, video playback and more.

Now what about us corporate types that would like to get in on the action?

Not to despair. They've treated the 8800, their flagship corporate device, to all but the camera upgrade.

As of the recent 4.5 OS Upgrade, you now have a device that can handle websites with aplomb. Mp3 playback, video playback, expandable memory, voice recording, wifi  and double as a flash drive in addition to it's traditional duty as a portable email, calendaring and contacts device.

The camera has been left out as many business places frown at phones with the ability to snap shots of highly confidential documents. Going so far to debar these outright. (Think government and court houses)

Not to despair, as the recently released BlackBerry 9000, aka BlackBerry Bold includes the camera while still maintaining the corporate outlook as well as a faster processor, brighter high res screen and other niceties. Allowing it to straddle both the consumer and business market with this feature set.

Should be coming to a business place near you.

PDA nirvana?? I think so.

I have certainly come to highly appreciate my Curve.  The ability to correspond via email and MSN Messenger from literally
anywhere is a major selling point for me.  The mp3 playback and camera is like icing on the cake.  Another oft overlooked
feature is the presence of a good ol 3.5 mm headphone jack.  Now I can listen to music with ANY pair of regular ass headphones,
including my new Logitech FreePulse. :happy0203:

You make a good point. Fortunately, for those with other model blackberry's there is a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter for us$10 or so.

Goody Goody good good good.

lol, the P900s were symbian smartphones.

Which model you talking about in particular El Capitan?? Impressive specs.

Sounds like a consumer "one ring" device. Think it could take on the Bold/9000?

What's the battery life?

Post a pic. Let's see what this powerhouse looks like.

I'd say if it can do push email a la BlackBerry, it may stand a chance in the corporate market.

crixx why you hatin' on the Berry? You know it does a Techie good. lol

Right now in work, i'm up to my ears in Bolds with the configurations etc and rolling out to hod's. They are okish devices, but from a purely technical standpoint, they suck ass. As a techie, I can never roll with a BB as a personal phone, and believe me, i've had some good face time with them. There's mass appeal to them though. Everybody comes and say wayyyyyyy blackberry boyyyy and I be like...wtf? This piece of $hit u gotta be kidding me. They are excellent email and collaboration devices and the screen is crystal clear, but other than that, they suck. The screen orientation and size also sucks. I can go on and on.

Forget all dat. Nokia N97 ftw!!!

Well the BB is a status symbol in this country, if you have a BB you are a big shot basically. People don't care about specs, they care about what is the new fad. Plus to be honest women and some men go by looks and the BB looks better, sleeker and more stylish than the n97 although that should not matter.

Can you tell me some of the ways the n97 is better than BB's? I am interested in finding out the difference in case I do by some chance buy a smart phone.

well not taking away from captain's coming response, but the reason i personally won't get a blackberry is mainly because of applications. My current phone, a Nokia N80, is well my all in one device, it's my webcam, my microphone, my portable network drive, my camera, my upnp multimedia display device, and that's just to list a few... with more third party apps i can do a plethora of things that i can't do with a blackberry. It's just like getting a pc, ur pc comes with windows, but it's the software u put on it after that defines what it is mainly used for, and i like that about smartphones that have a large software base. and currently i would swear by any series 60 device. Yes, there is palm, and windows mobile, but i'm not talking about lil gamez and worthless appz. I won't choose a blackberry as my personal device period, the features it comes with, i mainly won't have any use for it honestly, and RIM lacks alot of third party software developers so that area is weak. To each his own, but if ur looking for a truly flexible device, with alot of third party applications at your finger tips, get a Series 60 device.
