Need help deciding on new HD
« on: September 09, 2008, 01:54:47 PM »
recently decided to move on to a new HD from my 120Gig Baracuda which has been with me for 4 years and going...

However upon looking to source a decent HD localy, i find it very hard.
Firstly i stumbled upon this Seagate from mmstt.com.
http://mmstt.com/index.phppage=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=23&category_id=17&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=27&vmcchk=1&Itemid=27

problem is that i'm finding some pretty bad reviews about it on newegg especially (people stating that they die quickly).

So i decided, why not get a Baracuda again, cus dat seems to work fine.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148288

So i found this Baracuda on newegg, but, again... more bad reviews.

so my question is, does anyone have any experience with any of these HDs

or can anyone suggest a better alternative?

I lookin for prefereably a 500 Gig, SataII (with 32MB cache??)

one of my wd 500gb drives just died on me. Captain Awesome had a similar experience not too long ago.

Seems they aren't the most reliable of drives. Considering I've got a bunch of 250s and 160gb drives that have been running none stop for at least two years more than this one did.

May it RIP.

All drives crash, but I'd stray from WD on my next purchase.

I have the Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB drive and it works pretty well for me, no complaints.

Been using this model Seagate 500GB (ST3500630AS) in an external SATA/USB enclosure for about a year now, no issues to report, bar it can be a bit noisy sometimes.
God is dead.

Such a shame @ the 500gbs. A nice capacity at a nice pricepoint.

Now I'm really super strongly considering a raid setup. Or better yet, that Windows Home Server. It has some awesome backup capabilities.

Losing 500gb of data isn't my idea of a good time.

funny you should mention that, was looking into the raid thing myself recently...anyone got a comparison of the benefits of complete software raid over the on board? I'm swaying to WinRaid as it seems less likely to upf@#$ me...

as for the topic, is true with large drives, brand really isn't a big scene, i mean, my seagate failed epically, and all my WDs still running, even the 9GB nearly 8 yr old one. I have no real preference for hdds anymore, whatever working and within my budget, i just backup now religiously...but if you seriously thinking of 1 large drive, just get 2 smaller ones and use one as back up. You sleep better...believe me...
