Is SBCS a good place to do A+ certification??
« on: August 22, 2008, 04:42:10 PM »
I want to get myself certified and my intended institution Bordercom International but they are not having any more full-time classes this year and I don't intend to spend 3 months doing this course part-time.

So I was wondering if SBCS was a good option to consider??

Hmm ok, well I just didn't want to have to spend 3 months doing the course if it can be done in 12 days and since I'm in Tobago, I just wanted to be in and out of Trinidad..

Will have to call SBCS and see how that goes....that just threw off my plans a lil there but will have to look and see.

I not putting down any institution (In case you wondering I did the A+,Net+ as well as MCSE tutorials in BorderCOM) but is best to get the book and read it through and decide then if the classes are going to be worth it. I regret not doing that, it was easier than expected.

If you've ever built a PC/set up a network/install windows, then what you learn from that is about a 1/3 the book, maybe more.

The most you lose if you try it on your own is about 2 weeks to read through the book and run the practices (which is not a loss anyway you look at it) and about 100US for the exam,  vs. the TT3000+ you would spend for tutorials, only to realize you severely underestimated your intelligence.

It's up to you though, that was my experience with A+.
Imho, best to save the money and run Network+ right after or even a CISCO.

These are worth the money and you may not find answers for questions that might arise on your own or online easily, another good reason is that you usually run 1 or 2 labs that are basically setting up smaller versions of large networks an exercise that is best done with someone who have experience in the field.

Try to avoid using those Q&As from online they usually bogus (testking and thing) have a setta wrong answers...and look like a 5 yr old write it...the 1 good thing I can say about it is that the questions do come like that.

Hmm...you sure Bordercom not offering any more full time classes for A+? Which branch were u looking to attend?

(I'm one of their lecturers, so I can find out more)

Which branch you lecture-ate for?

Storytime

Our Ministry sent 30 employees on a Outlook 2007 training course at Bordercom in St Clair. The next day following the training (today), our helpdesk recieved a rash of calls of users complaining that every single piece of mail older than one day is gone from their inbox. Turns out the Borderline geniuses informed the attendees of a method of pulling mail from any email server i.e. Hotmail or an Exchange server like ours. So they decided that a good way to demonstrate was for attendees to use their work email accounts to pull all their mail onto their training machines and did not know/think of telling them that deleting the pulled mail does not delete the pst data files on the local machine, but the actual mail on our server itself.

So Monday morning I have to find myself by Bordercom to appeal to the trainer (SPK, I hope its not you) NOT to instruct users to use their work email accounts to demonstrate this feature and go through each machine to make sure that no confidential Ministry email is left on the systems. And after that, we have to go back through our backups and restore all those users' mail, which in itself is a painstaking effort for that volume of users at once...

So right about now, im a lil Bordercom hater for all the extra work they have given us to do.

lol...nah is NOT me (I only teach A+ and Network+ for the meantime, soon I might also be teaching CCNA)...

But seriously, that's a serious WTF @ what that trainer told them to do >_<...

Also, I primarily teach @ the St. Augustine location (closest to UWI while studying for my B.Sc), mainly during Saturdays except when UWI is out of session, then I teach full time, part time and Saturdays)...sometimes I do teach in the POS location if they need it, but it's less than ideal for myself.

Red, are you employed with a company? I recently had a student who did the A+ Saturday classes from Tobago, flying in on weekends, and the tickets were covered by his employer.

The exams are now US$163 per exam btw...

My personal advice though, if you have the experience though, just research for questions etc, and try your luck at the exams.

BTW Cpt. Awesome, I saw u in town the other day (when u saw Saxman in the car in South Quay, I was the driver in the car).

Yeah, it does suck....it's $163 US per exam in a normal circumstance, and $130 for Bordercom students....

I do offer a training course geared towards exam prep, but that's by my house, so it's unlikely that ppl would take it.

Hmm well the pc I got in 2005 has been dealt with by me, never had to carry it anywhere to fix any probs.

I replaced mobo and cpu in it on my own etc. so I guess it might be a waste to spend $4800 to do it there...

I just wanted the certification to help with getting a job, no I don't have a job yet but currently job hunting. Plan to do Network+ too to have some IT to add to my resume.

Anyone can suggest a good book/books to get? I'd just ask mom to order it on Amazon for me.

How do I go about doing the exam if I study for it by myself? Do I just go on a website online and pay for the exam so they send it to me or something?? Thanks

nah you have to go to a CompTIA certified center. The exams are multiple choice, you go, you sit, you clicky, and BAM, yuh get results.

get the normal comptia reading, check their website for the latest revision/s.

this the book i believes http://www.amazon.com/Certification-All-One-Exam-Guide/dp/0072229918

out of stock though

Hmm ok ok, wonder if I can just go in to Bordercom to pay and do it? That would save me a whole heap of drama...

The one you have in the link there isn't the one they have linked on their website, I just checked it :P and this one is in stock This one

The one u had in that link Red is what I use for my classes, as it's the version currently in use for the latest exams, so it's a pretty good book overall.

Hopefully I will get a chance to switch to SBCS if they ever process my application to lecture there....

Well I can't say how good SBCS in POS is...I can only relay my experiences from the Champs Fleurs branch...and it's a hit and miss case, depending on the abilities of your lecturer.
