Gaming on a Wireless Network
« on: August 07, 2008, 02:55:16 PM »
Ok ppl I have left Trini and returned to Tobago (bye bye flow modem I will always love you  :crybaby2: ) and now I'm on the Blink bandwagon....

The thing is there is already a pc at home so I had gotten a linksys wireless G router and a cheap Advantek usb adapter to setup a wireless network in the house for my pc to have internet in my room.

Well yes we all know wireless routing and gaming is a no no and I have found myself in that situation.

With a litte digging I came across D-Link who seem to have what they call a GAMING router (brrr?) claims to have speeds up to 108Mbps, here's a link for it D-Link 4300

A gamer who did a review on it claimed that it worked great and I won't mind trying this thing out paired with an adapter of the same brand that can handle the increased data exchange because right now my online gaming sucks with lag.....54Mbps really blows

I know the Wireless N technology still has it's kinks but I aint ready to try that esp due to prices..

Reason why I want to stay wireless cause I know moms will kill me for running lan cables through her house  :happy0203:

wireless gaming is not really a no no, you should expect a 10-20ms increase in ping times which is not really bad as you have already adjusted to having a 150-200 ping time while using blink broadband.

Yea I know but I guess it's either the "cheap" wireless usb adapter that I'm using or that fact that it's a 1mb blink connection I'm on(as opposed to the 2mb flow connection I had in Trini)  orrr the setup I did on the router is doing some kinda blocking somewhere.

I'm using the WPA security with TKIP encryption

but yea I expected increased ping times but I dunno, got raped in cod4 when i tried it and my ping was around 145ms but then again I haven't played that game in a while lol

TKIP encryption will always sacrifice speed for the level of security that it provides.  Your problem with the wireless
is not bandwidth, but latency.  A 1MBps internet connection will NEVER max out a wireless connection.
Of course, you self should know that once you gaming, nothing else should be throwing data around.

I shall do some research as to what router/adapter you should be using.

EDIT!!!  That D-Link router seems like the perfect one to replace the current one in use right now (based on reviews I've read).
Out of all the wireless adapters I've looked at, this one seems to be the best bet.  Don't bother with all the negative
reviews, they were plainly written by 'techno-peasants' who didn't fully understand what they were getting themselves into.
OF COURSE you have to give the thing a static IP for it to work optimally....sheesh.

Yea Slamming I know torrents rape how thing performs, only me here know how to download them that so that's not the problem.

Arcman I was looking at that one as one of the options myself, yea I know most of the ppl are really out of it thinking everything is going to be plug in and wuk one time.

I was just wondering if to go with the same brand D-Link in terms of the adapter but since this is supposed to be able to work well with the current Linksys G router I have, I won't mind getting it first to see if it will really make the difference instead of buying a whole new router and adapter. Thanks :)

one question while we on the topic of wireless gaming...

I had a lan party myself a few days back and i tried plugging a wireless router into my switch , PCs on the switch couldn't see ones interfacing with the router , but all could connect to the internet etc.

Games and file sharing wouldn't work over the LAN.

Network advice for a humble grasshopper?

u had 2 networks going back to the modem, one assigned from the modem and the other from the wireless router, this is a common mistake.
basically, you would need to disable the dhcp on the wireless, and it would basically be like another switch.
doh worry bout using a crossover cable, almost all routers can auto flip the connection to crossover even with a straight trough.

^^^ yep. exactly as he said.  The PCs on the wireless router were probably using a Class B config as opposed
to the Class C config that the modem (I'm assuming Blink here) would use.  Even though physically connected,
both networks would never see each other.

EDIT: ahhhh...that pic says it all.  GJ Neph.  Chakra fo dat. :)

lol^^ Man I feel I go have to upgrade to the 2mb package later on yes but combat arms still wukkin so I go manage heheh

512k, 1mb, 2mb.. u gettin d same ping straight through.. so that won't help with d latency as far i saw it.. only if yuh want a faster connection. i had them all and got the same pings throughout. Not sure if it had to do with my proximity to the exchange eh.. but that's just my experience.

well with the wifi networking thing, i use my network just to share files between the laptops and pc, so if i wanna watch tv using my laptop in d living room, i just stream it from d desktop. I've ran cod4, gears of war and unreal tournament 3 via the wireless router and suffered no bad latency , so it really has to be that usb stick, make sure ur gettin a quality connection in that room from the router. or since u are the only one that really downloads alot of stuff, u could do like me, i have two nics in my mobo, i connect the modem to one nic, the wifi router to the other nic, and i can share the internet via a proxy... to the others in the network. i used it even with my cellphone, they get net, full access to network, and u can control all their speed, website access etc. and still have a direct connection the the internet, no damage to your latency. and if you want all the speed, just turn off the proxy, and hog all the net.. lol

Nice with that diagram neph if only things were explained visually more often. Phil I really think is this adapter yes, I mean it really was a cheap one, it even feels cheap lol but it's getting a good signal so I really not sure what's the deal.

The phone line where the blink modem is connected to is in another room so I can't do nothing about that really but I'll have to dig up in the router settings about QoS in giving priority of traffic to my pc heheh

I guess when I do get a proper adapter like what arc suggested things will be much better. The cheal 100tt one I have go do it's wuk in the mean time LoL!!

Yea from my little knowledge of fooling around with routers, disabling the DHCP on the wireless router would make it act like a switch.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this would then allow you to setup static IPs on the systems connecting to it and thus allow for them to communicate with everything else, gaming included.

Correct...but to make things easier, you should choose a block of (class C) addresses outside the DHCP range,
and have each person choose an address and use that.  Its easily changed, and can be changed back to
'Automatic' pretty easily.

Actually, when using flow, you MUST connect the modem output directly to the internet port of a router in order to get internet access over a network. Now once this is done, you can patch a switch directly into a regular port in the router and have that switch give you internet connectivity and computer to computer communication with both the machines connected directly to the switch as well as machines connected to the router.

Just look at Nephilim's illustration. The diagram on the left titled "what yuh have". All u need is to connect the modem to the router instead of the switch. Don't connect your modem to a switch...at all. After that, dhcp on the router and each of the machines takes care of the rest.

^^^ Quite correct he is.  Nephilim's diagram assumes that the modem is from TSTT, since by default, its set to issue
DHCP addresses.  With Flow its the other way around.  Lord knows how much of a pain that is to set up, if you don't
know what you're doing.
