avatar v Naruto
« on: January 26, 2007, 04:06:49 PM »
Well, now I really do not want to offend the hardcore Naruto fans that it have out there, but I just want to point out something for the not-so-hardcore naruto watchers.

It have a cartoon called Avatar. Last airbender, and I don't think too much people know about it because it is only this Naruto sermon you hearing preaching all the time. Avatar is on Nick, 5.30 pm every weekday, and it better than Naruto by far. Naruto is a joke, and not even a funny joke, but a stale kind of knock-knock joke. it start on Cartoon net. and I try to follow it up for about 2 weeks but the thing stupid for spite. i just a little too old for that ( believe it).

the story on avatar - It's a kung fu based thing. Check on Wiki Ang is the last air-bender and along with an earthbender and a waterbender, he has to master the four bending styles ( including fire-bending) to stop the fire nation from conquering the world. Sounds interesting, yes.

It is on a season break now, so you can catch up before the next season start. It is the best cartoon ever, at least to me - no boring episodes like Sam X, not to childish like Naruto and no long running battles like Yu-gi. check it out!

A friendly word.

hmm

Nikkodemus obviously only watches the english naruto, which is completely sad, which means he probably only watched rurouni kenshin in english as well, just as sad.

Naruto besides filler is completely awesome times 2 and the REAL hardcore naruto fans read the manga and dont even bother with the damn fillers.
We are eagerly awaiting seeing the kakashi gaiden and then the subsequent akatsuki battles and teh return of sasuke and orouchi to the animated screen.

But on to the other one, i got into avatar late, and watched all episodes from season one to end of season 2, and it is pretty awesome indeed, the earth bender blind girl is pretty hot( id do her, blind b***hes need love 2) and yeah its a great show but .. you do realise your comparing chinese mythos to japanese anime/manga.... that kinda thing could start yet another war dude.

Nikkodemus you looking to get cuss....

Naruto in its pure manga form , is probably among the best storylines PERIOD , the manga has won best graphic novel award several times in english , i'm sure if it was a book written by a white woman it would have been a best seller to rival potter.

The same thing that happens to video game and comic book movies (Hulk anyone?Catwoman?) happens to anime to an extent , the manga artist is no longer involved at every step , and some other fool  has to add to  or change the storyline to make it suitable for the screen .

In the case of anime , alot of nonsense is added to make episodes last a full 30 minutes, plus in between episodes you have utter nonsense in order to lengthen the series so it doesn't pass the manga and run out of storyline.

I'v never watched a full episode of avatar myself  , but the 5 minutes i saw never held my attention .

I really like avatar. I cant really it compare it to Naruto since i only watched piece of the English Naruto movie, didn't really impress me but then I didn't give it enough of a chance to.

check out the manga before anything  here :
http://groups.msn.com/NarutoMangaReturns/volume21.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=6429

anime movies have nothing to do with the storyline , just there to make money ...

K did a little look at avatar , it is pretty good  , great fighting but bieng biased i'd still say naruto tops it.

I was not looking to get cuss. I know that it have some real hardcore fans of the naruto out there, who read the subtitles and the whole shabang, but it have plenty people who don't get into nothing so deep when it coming to entertainment, and they going to watch it in english or whatever they could get it in. I ended up watching card-captors in Spanish or portuguese (not really sure which.
All I saying is that Avatar is a nice simple cartoon that running over the season 2 right now (season 1 on weekends) and if you don't have time to go sorting through all the nonsense that it have, you could catch up on Avatar 5.30 on Nick. Because I don't know bout the original version, but what they giving you to watch on CN not so hot.

I wonder....nah....seriously though i does feel sorry for my little neighbour (8 yrs) who does be watching Naruto on CN and he call me up and was like

"taishou taishou rememeber the cartoon (he doesn't know better) you was telling me about LOOK IT ON TV" so i ran in only to hear that QUEER enlgish version i nearly vomit when kakashi spoke.

And avatar is not and will never be as hot as Naruto......good story line and decent moves but it lacks the drama and gore so....Nico as stated before you must've been subjected to the enlish CN version and I'm really sorry to hear that.

yes, It really sad, the english version on CN, and I did not mean to compare the two. But just to check that I talking bout the same naruto - this is the blonde, with the facial scratches and the nine-tail tactic and the "believe it!" catch phrase?

She. Nikkodemus is a girl.

That would be Toph, yes, sh is awesome, and you are aware that she's about 14 years old, right?

In any case, I find Avatar to be a whole lot more palatable than Naruto.

Naruto is decent, but a whole lot of hype goes around it (and, for some reason, I tend to revile things that are over-hyped). Avatar, I think, has a very deep storyline with very few plotholes and a solid base in various mythologies (such as Buddhism, Martial Arts Philosophies and the Hindu concepts of Chakra). I think that the writing staff on this show is simply the best in the world, because if you can integrate so much foreign culture into the storyline of an American cartoon show and still pull it off gracefully, that clearly deserves a round of applause.

Both shows possess a lot of technique and action, and explanations for what they do, when they do and why they do it. Both show an intricate appreciation of martial arts, despite the fact that Naruto focuses more on fictional arts based around Ninjitsu in comparison to Avatar using real world systems in its fight choreography.

BEWARE: RANT DEAD AHEAD.

Unfortunately, I would always prefer watching Avatar over Naruto, and for a very shallow reason, to boot. While Avatar is hugely popular and a very good watch, at the very least, it didn't spawn a bunch of retards who thought they could bend and constantly pushed the show square in my face, which is something that ticked me off severely about the fanbase of Naruto and effectively prevented me from ever getting deeper into the show.

"Why yuh doh like Naruto so?! OH GAWD IS BECAWSE HE WEARING ORANGE ENT?"

...no, quite the opposite. It's because of YOUR MOTHER.

If I'm not really into the whole Naruto thing, don't explode on me, for God's sakes.
Like it or not, I do have a right to like the show or not, and whatver I choose, you just have to deal with it. No amount of Chakra, or bull***t-no-jutsu, or people pretending to be ninja fanboys of the show is ever going to change that, no matter how much you shove it in my face and feel that I must be 'converted'. If that was the case, then I have two words for you, pal.

SCREW YOU.

[/END OF RANT]

I'll admit it, though....whenever I do catch some glimpses of Naruto, I do sit down and watch from time to time. However, while it is a decent show, I don't really take into account what episode I'm seeing, or what story arc that episode was in....all I really care about is just how well the show can entertain me, and give me some food for thought. The same practically goes for any show I watch, including Avatar.

Well, I and all myself used to get vexed when people start the conversion sermon, and when I started this thread, I did just come from giving naruto a try, and it was just so-so. But after that marathon that cartoon network put down, I saw the face of naruto and now, I am a believer. It really kind of hard to get past all the many reasons for not watching naruto... but if you could stomach it for about eight episodes in a row, it gets addictive.

I apologise for all the naruto bashing i have done in the past.

Neo, for the deep reflection you do on avatar, you know when the they going to get some new episodes for season 3? If you get your hand on a dvd so that you could follow the story, you might like it, because even though it is less credible than avatar plotwise with the s--tjitsui, it has a more captivating storyline if you could string the episodes together.

conversion sermon...lol...

*knock knock*
me 'ah comming, S--t man...'
*pauses Deathnote*
*opens door*
them 'hello sir we are from the open manga church of naruto-sama'
me 'oh s--t, why i didnt look out the window first'
them ' we are here to let you know that naruto is the most leetest anime ever and that DBZ is BALLS and that if you dont watch it the evil akatsuki group will take your soul and make you watch hamtaro re-runs'
*slams door, goes back to Deathnote that on pause*

oh btw i think the whole 'believe it' phrase is yankee made, in the manga and the anime Dettabeyo is a nonsensical term (well accoring to wiki)
like how we does say 'ENT?' in agreement, even though is not a word or even a question.

avatar aint bad imo, not my bag though, i actually fing it weird *NOT* to see the subtitles

SPONGEBOB...now THERE'S a cartoon...

The new season of Avatar should come either this month or in early April.
Which is a good thing, because the cliffhanger at the end of the Ba Sing Se saga has me hooked.

Don't start talking about something like Naruto/DBZ/RK series in a negative way in front of hardcore fans unless you've read the manga. The first edition. In the original Japanese. While being personally in Japan.

Otherwise they'll act like you just cuss dey mother in front of them and start gettin on.

Ey, dem hamtaro was good thing... and it won't be too bad to get some re-runs in that. Heh... Underneath the fuzzyness, Hamtatro was some serious action and all-rond dreadness. And "ent" is a word. A creole word but still, a word.

Short of starting an Avatar thread, NEO, you don't find they should bring back Uncle's son (or some new fire nationer) to add some drama to the fire nation side, since they kind of have everything under control now? Seeing as they done wipe out the pole and the monks?

And what you think really happen to ZukKo mother? Killed? Kinda harsh, no?

I gotta go with Avatar here myself.

My son, [X]-Jin got me into watching it and WOW. This anime is just amazing.

Aang pwns. The characters are truly likeable and respectable. They wisely largely left the cheese roles to animals instead of humans.

The entire series just oozes with goodness. The martial art moves, the bending, the script. Not a filler in site.

Even moreso, it was created by Americans. How they managed, is beyong me.

Watched all of Season 1 and Season 2. Dying to get my hands on Season 3 as soon as it comes out.

April isn't too far away. (Breathes deeply)

I know you weren't speaking to me.... but resurrection doesn't exist in the avatar universe. Death is absolute...it's one of those things which are more or less stressed thematically in avatar. Even the avatar, the re-incarnated spirit of the earth and the elements, can perish. Resurrecting Iroh's son cheapens (imo anyway) the characters backstory and it takes away the event in his life that moulded him into the wise and sympathetic character that he is.

Besides, there is a lot of drama on the fire nation side, though. You have a "redeemed" Zuko yet to fall back into his father's graces and an Iroh, captured for treachery who has his fate in his heartless brother's hands. That and the obligatory character devlopment of the fire lord... and Zuko's mother is most likely dead. Died trying to protect Zuko from Azulon's wrath against Ozai.

I don't know about you guys, though....but I think the fight coreography in Avatar is excellent, though. Consistently, too. There's a scene between Zuko and Aang by the well...it's one of the best -animated-  hand-to-hand fight scenes I've seen. There is so much technical substance mixed in with ample flash.

What can you do to end the hunger?
It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food
When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows
When there is nothing to feed yourselves...
Then you will see that money can't be eaten.

Well I know NEO is gonna kill me for this mother of all Necro Posts but OMG, just saw the end of Season 3 Avatar: The last air bender and boy was it ever worth the wait.

That was a damn entertaining season finale.

Not to be missed by fans of the series (or fans of good animation/story telling on the whole actually)

This series has earned it's spot as an all time fav.

Did exceptionally well in the "viewership" department, likening it's performance to the kid cartoon equivalent of The Dark Knight, no small praise. See a snippet below from Hybrid Fire.

The massively epic finale brought massively epic ratings. According to Nielsens ratings for last week, finale night brought in almost 6 MILLION VIEWERS (the fourth highest watched program that night…that’s pretty damn good for a kid’s show) from all over the nation, setting it as the highest watched Avatar event in history. This also made Avatar: The Last Airbender the highest watched animation feature in United States television history. Needless to say, the net international viewers for Sozin’s Comet will undoubtedly reach upwards of 10 million+ viewers, as Avatar also has a strong fan base in multiple regions of the world.

Strange that there weren't any posts about this recently, or maybe I just missed 'em.

(awaits bashing)
