jamaica may legalise the herb
« on: March 04, 2008, 08:45:26 PM »
might not have to go holland after all... hmmm

Quote
Jamaica is considering the legalisation of marijuana, a drug revered by members of the island's large Rastafarian population who say smoking it is part of their religion.

A seven-member government commission has been researching possible changes to the Caribbean nation's anti-drug laws, which some police complain are clogging courts and jails with marijuana-related cases, a government official said.

"We have discussed it, and we are preparing a report to present to the prime minister," said Deputy Prime Minister Kenneth Baugh.

In 2003, a government commission recommended legalising marijuana in small amounts for personal use.

But lawmakers never acted, saying legalisation might entail loss of their country's US anti-drug certification. Countries that lose it face economic sanctions.

A US State Department report on Friday said Jamaica is the largest producer of marijuana in the Caribbean and a major hub for drugs bound for the US.

Members of the Rastafarian movement, which emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s out of anger over the oppression of blacks, have long lobbied for the legalisation of the drug that they say brings them closer to the divine.

There are an estimated 700,000 Rastafarians in the world, most of them among Jamaica's 2.6 million people.

Mainly Americans who will then come back from their vacation in America, Ordered to do a drug test by their boss and then be swiftly fired.  Isn't the system Magical?

When you think about it though in some senses Marijuana is less dangerous than alot of other drugs and alcohol.  Don't really see why it was banned in the first place.

maybe because it is after all affecting your senses and reflexes, hence operating heavy equipment like a crane or even driving a car can pose serious risks to others.

But doesn't Alcohol have pretty much that same effect on you?

Yes, and that's why it was Illegal in the United States until the Mobs started making Millions on illegal sales and were not being taxed, hence the Gov't legalized it and charged tax to make money off people's addictiion to alcohol.

I think Marijuana is a little different in that instead of having people have a drink at lunch during working hours, people will feel the need to smoke Marijuana ON the job and where will the productivity go?? It benefits noone in the longrun to legalize Marijuana. Perhaps for medicinal purposes with Cancer and prescriptions from doctors, but not to be sold like Cigarettes!!

Big corporations don't have their talons in it. How do you think stuff gets legalized in a place like the U.S.? Trust me, it isn't a few hippies placarding Capitol Hill. You need big money lobbyists.
If big business had a stake in weed then it'd be legal in no time.

Frankly I wouldn't want it legalized and have people polluting my air with the smoke. I think marijuana is a waste of time as far as spending alot of money and effort trying to put pressure on it. Arrest a man if he blatant but better to turn a blind eye if it leads to better interdiction on the hard drugs that do alot more damage.

Well it really doesn't matter if it formally "legal" or not, no one get's arrested or charged to having ganja in Jamaica. Only if you REALLY piss off the police officer or they REALLY UBBERLY out for you....honestly I don't really like the smell of ganja smoke but it is everywhere in parties here, police are at the parties and they do nothing to be honest, so many people smoke weed they cannot even possibly try to hold someone for it, it just won't be practical.

From my experience, people sell branches of weed in front of the police. It was quite a shock to go into a party and hear "high grade, high grade" and realize is weed they selling...lol

So I really don't think it makes much of a difference many of my friends smoke weed in front the police and I am also sure if I did it would be no scene so in my opinion it really doesn't matter "legal" in the books or not.
