Pioneer has revealed that they have developed a Blu-ray disc that can store 400GB of data on 16 layers. While these super Blu-ray discs are nothing new, Pioneer claims that the specs for the laser remain unchanged compared to that of a typical Blu-ray player, meaning these discs would technically work in existing Blu-ray players. There has always been difficulty with multilayer discs as the data on each layer can "bleed" onto other layers when being read. Apparently, Pioneer has used their expertise with the DVD format to solve that issue. Little else is known about these discs, though more information is expected next week at the Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008, which is being held on the 13 July in Hawaii.
