My ZEROTherm looks the same way, and yes, the colour does aid in better heat radiation.

I've always thought darker colours retain heat better.. how does that help it get RID of more heat?

If an object is in being heated and it has less energy than its surroundings it will absorb, if it is moved into a area where it then has (presumably) more energy it will then radiate to its surroundings. (Equilibrium iymc!)

The color just determines how readily it will do this, darker colors radiate and absorb easily, while lighter colors do the converse as well as act as good reflectors.
