Looks like a review of i5 is out and it bodes well and not depending on how you look at it, the brief is that the Core i5 competes toe to toe with Core i7 920, which is GOOD for a consumer as, why pay more for the same performance, the bad? possible product canabalism if Corei5==Corei7 what the hell do I do with an Core 8xx series? and well AMD definitely got its knickers all tied up now XD

Well, you KNOW I hadda be quick to defend meh 920 baby. No i5 eh touching that when it comes to multithreading power, which all can admit, is quickly becoming more and more of a win for modern apps and games.

Ah yes the sweet sweet sub zero temperatures of liquid nitrogen cooling.

Quote
Core i7 Extreme Overclocking with LN2

http://hothardware.com/Articles/Core-i7-Extreme-Overclocking-with-Liquid-Nitrogen/?page=1

Enthusiast level hardware is exciting, especially if you can make use of its full potential. When Intel released the monster 3.33GHz Core i7 975 processor, they laid claim to the highest performing desktop CPU on the market. Interestingly enough, they were competing with themselves as the 3.2GHz 965 held the pole position up to that point. But the new model was welcome as it brought with it the new D0 stepping which lowered operating voltage requirements, tightened up memory timings and brought slightly cooler temperatures. Of course enthusiasts also noticed another tangible benefit in the form of higher overclocking headroom.

Intel's Extreme Edition processors are not for everybody. Economically, they just don't make much sense for mainstream users. These extravagant chips were designed for smaller segment of the market where the consumers who buy them tend to push their hardware a lot harder than most folks. Here, workstation professionals, overclockers, benchmark freaks, and extreme enthusiasts spend as much time tweaking system settings for optimal performance as they do operating their computers. Besides the small speed bump that the 975 features at its stock settings, the main advantage it has over its more affordable siblings is an unlocked multiplier which provides coveted flexibility to overclockers as they push core speeds to new heights. If overclocking is an art, using an Extreme Edition processor is like painting with the finest tools on an immaculate canvas.

In order to push the limits of the 975, we decided to leave the safe confines of air cooling and enter the precarious world of sub-zero chilling. Liquid nitrogen, or LN2, is commonly used as a coolant within the overclocking scene and can reach much lower temperatures than air, water, or the phase change cooling you may be accustomed to. While we are used to seeing processors operate in air-cooled settings of around 40'C, the use of LN2 will allow us to push clock speeds all the way down in the -80'C range in order to unlock the overclocking capabilities of both the motherboard and CPU. We paired a Core i7 975 processor with the EVGA X58 Classified motherboard to find out just how far we can go with the X58 platform and Intel's current flagship CPU.

Indeed those D0's sip on the power. I wonder how much more oc I will get with a D0 with all dimms occupied...They should have used a test system with all 6 dimms occupied. I would have really likeed to see that.

* steupses loudly at score *

AND they have HT on...AND they used not one, but TWO Geforce GTX 295s (that's FOUR GPUs)

Was expecting a whole lot better than even my 25730 (3DMark06)

The Vantage score is insane though.

i5 750, 17 860 and i7 870 are out, reviews here and here. A board for them is also out, a bit hot pricewise for a midrange part though. We'll wait for the more reasonable options.

As for AMD's price performance advantage...well...there isnt one anymore. The i5 750 is $50us cheaper and performs better all round than the AMD 965be.

Well well well.  Intel, in one fell swoop, has now regained possession of all base.
Them new i5s actually matching/exceeding the i7 920 at stock speeds.

I'm interested to see the OC results.

It seems that the dual-channel vs triple-channel argument is now moot, from a gaming standpoint.
Whatever price/performance advantage that AMD had, has now evaporated.

That i5 750 will be the new price performance CPU king, well, unless AMD chooses to drop
the price of their most expensive option (the PII X4 965 BE) to about 150 US or so, which is unlikely.

After all the hype, I am truly a bit surprised at the results.  I actually expected the performance
to be right on par with the Phenom IIs.  Socket 775 is officially dead now...and Intel said there
are no plans to reduce Core 2 prices, so the choice for an upgrade/new build is now clear.

Great stuff.

I don't see how Arc you of all ppl thought the Core i5 would be comparable to Phenom II. As has been shown since the days of Opteron, increased memory performance does NOT account for core logic. They reduced the triple channel to dual channel, the ONLY thing that would suffer was memory performance which quite frankly was already FAR about desktop needs. Hence Core i7 which is the child of Core i7 would perform comparably. I want to see how intel will price everything though. And AMD is officially inside the wall, not backed to the wall, not in a tight spot, INSIDE the wall, almost iron maiden in the wall XD. All I can hope for now is the prices will fall even more (though that is a rough way to go since no profit==no money). But we'll see.

Update: I just read through Fudzilla's review and though bleak AMD isn't written off. They still rule the HTPC or low cost low power media systems with far superior int gpus. That aside though I am waiting on price cuts!!!

Niceness...liking that mobo a whole lot.  MSI went with the 'less is more' approach,
and based on the reviews I've read about the i5 CPU performance, its actually advisable
to spend less money on mobo/RAM, and channel those savings into beefier GPU, seeing as the
gaming performance right on par with the i7.

Of course my i7 setup will still pwn it. :sassy:

So, who gettin the first P55 setup?

Nope...new socket for the i5, so you need a new bracket, or a new cooler.

The new Zalman CNPS 10X look like a bess i5 cooler, but then i aint see what Noctua come with yet.
