Help! Thoughts on WideScreen 24" Monitor Selection
« on: May 15, 2008, 03:10:01 PM »
OK Folks,

Looking for opinions on the following:

Want to upgrade from the awesome Acer 2216wd 22" flat panel, which costs about US$225 online to a 24" panel, esp US$390.00

Main reason, the warm fuzzy feeling of being able to handle 1080p and HDMI

At a glance:

Acer P243WAid 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 2ms, 3000:1, 1920x1200 (WUXGA), DVI-D, HDMI

That 2ms is GTG (rubbish rating from what I've gathered as BTB is the better indicator of performance)

Like wise for the 3000:1 which is dynamic and not the true contrast of the panel.

Newegg carries this for US$389.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009125

Note, the panel costs about 55% more than the 22" Acer and offers only 9% increase in visual real estate.

Yeah, I'm discouraging myself here as a write this, lol.

So the real question, do you think the additional pixels for 1080p support and HDMI connectivity (for next gen consoles) is worth the premium?.

That's for the living room.

This is for the PC in the bedroom.

i think the price is justified for the HD ability, and for the MUCH appreciated extra pixels, i would go for it NGW, but that's just me :P

At that price, yes it is worth it.  Especially for the 1080p goodness.

Ummm excuse me you are all noobs. For $550us this biatch pwns all 10 of your eyes (all of which you WILL need to view this entire thing from average monitor viewing distance.)

That's what my dad bought after Arc bought his AL2216W. I cant count the amount of times i've tried to steal this monitor from him. Man WICKED he have a 20" AND this too. Reaaaaaaaallll bess unit.

And just to show you the sheer size of the thing look how it makes the 22" look like a 13"!

Yeah they've been around for a while. If I remember corectly from the research we did, they sold their products under another brand name to other sites or something. But in the roughly 5 months we've had it, never once had a problem.

I know the jump from $390 to $550 is a pretty big one, but I thought it was still worth mentioning.

lol @ the CoD4 dvd in the monitor picture. Ent boy Awesome, my COD dvd case forever on my desk.

What price you saw the samsung for rage??

That vid hype is alright but again, they are quoting 2ms which is surely GTG and not BTB.

Also, that 3000:1 ratio is certainly dynamic and not the true contrast ratio. Take with two heaping teaspoonfuls of salt. lol

Samsung is a strong brand in LCD, so that's not saying the unit is crap, just saying the video touted the PR figures rather than the more pertinent facts.

One feature that the acer lacked was one button switching between inputs. It was no fun having to navigate through the OSD menu to move between analog and digital inputs. I have an old NAS box sitting below my PC as well as the intention of hooking up a console, that's three inputs (and a lot of menu clicks).

Awesome, does that 28" beast have a button to cycle between inputs?

It's costly (see attached) but I may be willing to fork over the dosh for it.

Ill check for the automatic source selection. I hear you on the acer's lack of it. Luckily I just have one pc and one monitor to worry about so it isnt really a problem.

Samsung is indeed a force to be reckoned with in the monitor industry, but their prices are usually hot in comparison to other brands that give you very similar quality.

Noob, my honest opinion is that if I want a monitor bigger than 22", I should get a big screen tv (32" at least is good enough for me) the supports at least 720p...not as if Flow broadcasts in high def, but when I hook up the tv to my machine and play those 720p rips....yeah...

But to buy a large monitor like that 28" or higher, I prefer to go for a larger tv, hook it into the computer to watch shows and perhaps play games and use the monitor itself to do normal work like browsing etc.

nice angle.

Didn't think of that.

What's the price delta going from that 28" 16:10 monitor to a 32" 16:9 TV?

Looks like we're heading into W1ntry's 42" LCD in the bedroom dream territory, lol
