Military robot kills without compunctionYou have 15 seconds to complyBy Nick Farrell: Wednesday, 30 April 2008, 8:22 AMTHE ISRAELI ARMY is showing off a new battlefield-ready robot which will carry machine guns into places too dangerous for humans.Dubbed the 'Guardium', the four-wheeled robot will be operated from a centre which looks like a video games console well away from the front line.It comes equipped with cameras, night-vision equipment and sensors, as well as weapons like machine guns. Philp Pullman describes it here. What is perhaps more scary is that it has a few programmes that will allow it to operate on its own following preprogrammed routes, it can patrol along a barrier fence or make its way through a city without having to phone home.G-Nius Unmanned Ground Systems, which built the beast, said it made it ideal for armies whose troops were used to taking casualties from roadside bombs. The control system, which is similar to a Playstation, runs into several million dollars and each bot costs about $600,000.The Israelis are refusing to say when the Guardium will be in service if ever. However analysts at military think tank Globalsecurity.org, told the Chicago Sun Times that they represent the way that modern warfare is going. You can get them to advance without fear, and they kill without compunction. And if it does get blown to bits by 'friendly fire' you don’t have to write a letter to its parents to tell them.
