Agreed, because now we're seeing a virtual flood of similar devices.  Some of which are improving
upon the EeePC's shortcomings.  As a result of this, even Asus themselves aren't resting on their laurels.

Good show all around.

Take another UMPC dey drive...AcerAspire One/Mini Note
« Reply #42 on: May 29, 2008, 09:16:27 AM »
Pic after the break.

Quote
Is this the Acer Aspire One MiniNote?

Update. Some details are emerging…see below.

Hot on the heals of the Dell Mininote leak are these images which just dropped into our forum. This posts are titled ‘Aspire One.’

It’s got the same touchpad as seen on the HP 2133 and what appears to be an 8.9″ screen. Images show a, probably linux-based, user interface. Anyone recognize that UI?

Thanks ‘Liza’ whoever you are. We’ll be looking out for this at Computex and as soon as we have enough info, we’ll add it to the database.

Update#1: From 3Fire. (Source Mobile 01)

According to his information in that pag, Acer’s Mini-Note is called “Aspire One”, running Windows XP SP3 on the 8.9 screen with resolution of 1024 X 768. The ODM partner is Quanta, the main notebook ODM partner of HP, DELL and Apple. The source thinks “Aspire One” is better looking than Asus’ EEE PC, however, no photo release yet.

Looks like it’s an Atom/Diamondville-based device. Digitimes mentions a 299 Euro price which is 100 Euro cheaper than the Eee PC 900!

http://www.umpcportal.com/2008/05/is-this-the-acer-aspire-one-mininote/

Doh talk ASUS getting cutass at their own game.

And Dell's offering...The Mini Insporon

I bumped into Michael Dell at All Things D after his interview, and he was nice enough to show me this laptop that he was carrying that he said no one's seen before. It's a small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133. He wouldn't tell me what OS it's running, or the pricing, but that it's a low-cost notebook meant for developing countries, and I hope here. Maybe it's Atom-powered. Who knows? But I do see three USB ports, a card reader, VGA out, Ethernet, and that red candy shell. I couldn't tell how big the screen was before it was tucked away into a black sleeve and ushered from the building, but it's small. Update: Dell just released a pair of shots that add to the sense of scale, but no official name yet.

Nice, nice.....once it drive down the MSI Wind price, I happy. :happy0203:

Wildfire is joke.  Gateway is probably the only major PC maker not on the ultraportable bandwagon as yet,
but now the market is in danger of becoming saturated.  Only the techies will be able to discern which
devices offer the best price/specs/performance value when they all hit the market.

Ummm, nope.  The OLPC was never marketed as an ultraportable, internet device.  It was primarily aimed at
'third world' education programs.  While it can be agreed that this new ultraportable phenomenon may have taken
some design cues from it, it was Asus who demonstrated that there is a very potent market for devices such as
these.

I certainly would not have bought a '100-dollar' laptop anyway (at least, not with the OLPC's touted specs).

OLPC was in the works before Asus brought up this idea and I believe the ULPC belongs to VIA btw. Yuh don't get smaller than their designs.

Well I think after the whole OLPC laptop thing which was healthily publicized, Asus rock back and said hmmmmmm while stroking their beards. So even though OLPC didnt poineer these ultra portable laptops, they sure triggered the thought pattern that resulted in the mushrooming we're witnessing today.

MSI Wind pricing rises by up to $100
« Reply #53 on: July 31, 2008, 06:15:12 AM »
Well this sucks and blows...

Quote
When MSI's Wind U100 nettop first popped up on U.S. retail sites earlier this month, the U100 versions with three- and six-cell batteries cost $479.99 and $499.99, respectively. However, Laptop Magazine reports that MSI has jacked up those prices. According to an MSI representative, "Since the cost of the battery and materials raise (sp), [MSI] had no choice but adjust the MSRP to $499.99 with 3-cell battery and $549.99 with 6-cell."

As Laptop Magazine points out, a hike to $549.99 cancels out the U100's pricing advantage over Asus' Eee PC 1000H. The 1000H has similar specs (a 10" 1024x600 display, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a six-cell battey), and it currently goes for $549.99 at Newegg. But that's not the whole story.

As it turns out, many online retailers are actually charging more than $550 for the six-cell Wind U100. Mwave lists the diminutive notebook for $599.99, while Microtel asks $599, and ZipZoomFly demands $559. Folks who ordered the system before the hike aren't necessarily better off, either. Laptop Magazine learned that Buy.com actually cancelled $499.99 orders when MSI announced the price increase "to avoid being de-authorized by this manufacturer."

Only problem "hampering" atom is the chipset. If they would only get around to it sooner, it would rain further on via's parade. As it stands, It's snappy and low powered, but the chipset's (945g) power consumption isn't low - and may even surpass the chip itself :(

Still, just means there's room for improvement.

Couple more umpc's to throw at you - the Wibrain is prolly known, but in it's current via iteration. Well, here's comes the atom version with much better performance...
http://gizmodo.com/5030593/wibrain-i1-umpc-gets-intel-atom-processor

What's really gotten me into a tizzy is a bit from raon - the everun note.
While atom is chained to a higher-power-than-it-needs-to-be-chipset instead of the x4500 we may die for, turions (yes, this mini runs turion, wear gloves :D) run off AMD's ati 690g chipset, which is enough power for light gaming. i.e. light 3d gaming. This isn't a gaming device in any stretch of imagination -  or is it when you compare it to the ds and psp? Hell, the Wibrain il has the shape for it already!
http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/08/13/the-raon-everun-note-looks-to-be-pretty-powerful/
Just expecting flames to erupt from exhaust ports on this thing though!

Anyone wanna open pandora's box? In trying to get to lower possible power consumption and stripping away complex arrays of transistors, fully RISC type ARM based processors do have an advantage (which is slowly eroding -  wait 4-5 generations for x86 to really get there). TI OMAP3 processors are to run from 600MHz to 800MHz, and features 3d gaphics accelerators for opengl, usb2, etc - all for under a watt! On standby, my omap2 n800 lasts ~10 days, resuming is instant.
Openpandora is your GP2X on steroids. Open platform for development and computing, this DS like system can handle some decent games, while offering the functionality of a umpc.
http://openpandora.org/index.php

Given the gp2x community, I'm expecting tons of emulators, but poor support in a frontend or linux gui. The gp2x was a great system, but hardly robust. It does seem like they're going about pandora in a much more professional way though, and I'd bet Debian gets ported given that they've got quite a few ARM packages available.

true - though It's more interesting for the tech in use. Definitely a thumb board - so possibly better than blackberry, though definitely sux for real typing. some of the other pictures really make me want to see this next to a ds.

I now look @ that again

With the original price being $699 this is nowhere in the same category as the EeePC nor can it be classified as a true competitor. Or maybe im just wrong. An alternative/competitor to the Eee should be about the same size and most importantly an INEXPENSIVE replacement for a laptop.

Guess who's back. Not me. :|
