Now THIS is what the eeepc should have been. I see they very suspiciously left out the price of the XP system.

Hmmm...but assuming that Windows XP can be slapped onto the linux version and given the fact that laptop memory is now extremely cheap (pitch the 512 and slap in a 2gb stick perhaps), $400 is an absolute f*****n steal for this thing.

*Considers*

hmmmmm ...now you have me thinking *-)

I'd sell my Eee PC to buy the Linux version of the MSI!

Now when you compare the specs of the Eee PC 900:

Intel Celeron M ULV 900MHz processor
Integrated Intel GMA 900 GPU
12 GB of Flash-based storage (4 GB onboard SSD and 8 GB PCI-E mini card SSD)
1 GB of DDR2 RAM (667 MHz)
Windows XP operating system
8.9-inch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution
Ports: 3 USB 2.0, 1 VGA monitor out, headphone jack, microphone input, SD card reader (SDHC compatible), Kensington lock slot, Ethernet 10/100
Webcam (1.3 MP)
Battery: 4-cell 5800 mAh 7.2V Li-Ion (rated at 3.5 hours)
Wireless: 802.11b/g Atheros
Input: Keyboard and Multi-touch touchpad
Dimensions: 22.5cm(W) x 17cm(D) x 2cm~3.4cm(H)
Weight: approximately 2.2 lbs with battery, 2.8 lbs travel weight with AC adapter.

.....with the specs of the MSI Wind, the choice is clear at the $550 US price point.

Based on the reviews I've read of the Eee PC 900, its performance is quite snappy,
but suffers from reduced battery life compared to the Eee PC 4G.

Not cool.

yea, Asus did a boo boo by stickin ppl with the 4400mAh Battery in the 900 as opposed to the 5400mAh that comes with the 700 ...disapointing i must say. and i have read a lot of reviews with ppl b!tchin about it, and that Asus have acknowledged it as an honest mistake, and i also hear that some UK residents are getting the batteries replaced with the bigger battery on Asus! come one Asus, you tryin ah smart ting with ppl, and fuh spite yuh sen the 900 to reviewers WITH the 5400mAh battery to boot!

Thank god for competition.

If MSI did not come out with that very competitive product, those cries from displeased customers would have definately fallen on deal ears. They would just have said "well thats how it is if you want the bigger battery, look we have it for sale here."

Take a look at a moderately indepth review done by a Chilean site of the Wind. Can you believe that the screen in this thing is an OLED screen? My word.

the more i read obout this MSI Wind, is the more i like it. what bothers me with the Asus is the amount of changes that are happening, and they still rush to release to the public 'unfinished' versions. i'll use my 701 for the hour, and watch which manu. comes out with a great answer.

OK, here's a super-roundup of all the Eee PC's upcoming competition in one place, you guessed it, Tom's again.

Out of all the models featured, I'd still go for the MSI Wind (don't know where they got the '$700' price from).

Maybe I'm being confused or watever but wasnt the point of the initial Eee PC to be a "cheap" mini alternative to the regular laptop?....how can these be competitors when they are $400+(which i believe is the normal price of a lowend laptop)

The prices go up slightly as the specs are increased, but most of these are still considered competition because their
size and weight are comparable with that of the original, and new EeePC models.

i agree with Arc there EK, the whole purpose of these laptops is so that they are much more portable than the  regular laptops (e.g. 15" screens), and the slightly lower spec. hardware helps with the lower power consumption (e.g. Pentium M, Intel Atom, Flash Based Drives).

@ Arc's preference for the MSI Wind, the only thing i don't like about it is that they're using a conventional 2.5" rotating HDD, i much prefer the speed and lower power SSD's. if capacity is the determining factor, i believe that the 8GB Eee is my solution (for the 701 Series), and the XP Version 900 Series (cuz the Linux version has a combination of onboard and add-in slower speed expansion memory. any other storage would be perfectly stored on a SDHC 16-32GB card.

We still have to wait and see how the Wind blows when it releases. The prices now are speculation and ive seen some wildly different estimates.

I believe a better comparison of features vs price can be made once the actual price comes to the fore.

More ultraportable iwmc...

The Via OpenBook

Pretty decent specs, but the Via C7 CPU might be a deal-breaker. :(

Actually, that pic makes it look good. I've seen other pics and believe me...its not that great.

For starters it fat no mc. And...well...its ugly and specs are pretty underwhelming...then again it IS an ultraportable...

but somehow it manages to run Vista surprisingly well...

Pics...http://www.engadget.com/photos/via-openbook-hands-on/826103/

But THIS prototype from OLPC could be the one to pwn them alllll...come 2010 at least.

Asus 1000 coming soon?

Everyone is talking about the Asus EEE 901 coming soon but looks like the Asus 1000 will also arrive at Computex 2008.

ASUS is looking forward to welcoming you during Computex 2008 in Taipei, Taiwan, for the ASUS’ 08 Computex Trilogy of launch events. We would also like to specially extend an invitation to you to attend the official global launch of the new Eee PC™ 901 and 1000 series.

This makes sense with the MSI Wind soon launching with their 10" mini notebook. Asus would counter with their own 10" mini notebook.

http://www.gizmolounge.net/2008/05/asus-1000-coming-soon.html

Hmmm...wonder what those specs would be like...

AMD-powered Wizbook aims at Eee PC

Quick(ish) Red Fox jumps over LazEee PC

By Stewart Meagher: Wednesday, 28 May 2008, 11:57 AM

THE ULPC MARKET just got a little more complicated with the birth of the Red Fox Wizbook, a direct - and on first impressions more than worthy - opponent to the plucky little Intel-powered Eee PC from Asus.

The Wizbook comes in two flavours and seems to be available in the Philipines only at around Ł225 for for the 10-inch version and Ł190 for the lower-specced eight-incher.

The gadget boasts a bigger screen than the Eee PC, as well as a replaceable 80GB HDD, a PCMIA slot and double the battery life.

Both models come pre-installed with Ubuntu Linux but there seems to be no reason (other than price, of course) why either would not happily run Windows XP. µ
