Mortal Kombat 8: MK vs DC Universe!
« on: April 07, 2008, 08:01:38 AM »
Midway is due to announce some details on the next installment of the Mortal kombat series, come the 17th of April, 2008. In the meanwhile, keep an eye on this site:

http://www.noob.com

You'll notice that there is a small countdown timer there, as well as an ominous 'ANSWERS' message above it.
The timer is actually marking the time left before the Midway Gamer's Day event (held in Las Gevas, Nevada), where the public will finally get some answers about the newest Mortal Kombat game after almost two years of silence from the company.

The only things confirmed about the game so far is that many of the original characters will not return, the fighting engine will be completely reworked from the ground up, and the graphics will employ Epic Game's Unreal Engine 3 engine. A demo of the engine's capabilities can be seen here:

Here is what the engine is capable of when applied to the social networking game, Rhythm Star:

The game is being developed for the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3.

By the way, anybody want to bet that Scorpion would return in this game?

Scorpion's been absent from one game. I think midway knows to never let that happen again.
What can you do to end the hunger?
It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food
When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows
When there is nothing to feed yourselves...
Then you will see that money can't be eaten.

If they can get the combat to move fluidly like Soul Calibur instead of stiff like those last 3d games they brought out that would be a step in the right direction and i'll actually considering getting it.

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

More news on noob.com, from another MK site:

Quote
Ed Boon's website, noob.com, kontinues entertaining us with new clues about the upcoming new MK game while we wait for April 17th, Midway Gamer's day, in which MK8 will be unveiled.

Ed Boon now shows us a bunch of numbers which can be changed into letters if we take those numbers as the number of order of the letters in the alphabet. As a result, we have this crosswords (thanks to Mick-Lucifer posting it @ MK Online):

Vertical: Tree, Finish, Evolve/Evolved, Klose, Sleep, Mode, Arcade, Turn, Rage, One, Victim, Bait, Deep, Dream, Around, Evict, Freeze, Help, Slim.

Horizontal: Story, Life, Free, And/DNA, Island/Land, Sweden/Eden, Online, Odd, Lied, Grow, See, Kombat, Rain, Spear, Crime, Perspective, Dark, Venom, Home, Bleed, Torn, Fool, Teleport/Port, Lets's age, Wii.

Diagonal: Dead, Sea, Peer, Tear, Cave.

Thanks again to Mick-Lucifer for his efforts.

...I think I see the word 'Story' in reverse in the first line, also.

If they can get the combat to move fluidly like Soul Calibur instead of stiff like those last 3d games they brought out that would be a step in the right direction and i'll actually considering getting it.

True. Ed Boon did promise a new fighting engine, and that's what we can hope for right now.

If they do this i'd get two copies of the game.

Mortal Kombat 8....Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics?! What the-
« Reply #5 on: April 16, 2008, 06:45:51 AM »
Just one day before Midway is due to release information about the newest Mortal Kombat game, a new rumour is sweeping across the entire MK community and, in a nutshell, turning it completely upside down.

I'll just quote the article from MK Secrets here:

Quote

Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe
Posted On: Apr 15 2008, 12:02 AM

Do you still remember one of the very first rumors that hit the net. Exactly!!! It was that the next Mortal Kombat game (currently known as Mortal Kombat 8 ) is going to be a Versus title, combining both Mortal Kombat and DC characters. However time has passed and this rumor was forgotten. But today it was made clear that this rumor is true.

In preparation for Midway Gamer's Day, that is in just a few days, Midway has added the next Mortal Kombat game in the list of titles that are going to be released in the second half of the year. The game is listed as:

Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe
NOTE: NOT an official image.

This means that we are really going to get a "VS" Mortal Kombat game.

What effect is all this going to have on the Mortal Kombat community is to early to predict.

Keep an eye on Mortal Kombat Secrets. We will update with more information as soon as we find out more.

And remember you heard this news first here at Mortal Kombat Secrets - The most informative Mortal Kombat website on the net.

Source: http://mksecrets.net/indexeng.php

.....it's just a rumour, and personally, I'd like to believe that's all there is to it.
However, lest we forget, April Fool's Day has already come and gone and Mortal Kombat Secrets is usually a very reliable source of information.

All I can say is...we should wait and see what happens tomorrow or the day after. Then we'll know for sure whether or not Midway has officially lost their minds.

Of course....seeing Batman do a FATALITY might be cool.

Interesting. I do think it's about time Mortal Kombat gets a comic book title too. Maybe this interaction with DC will cover it?

Well, folks, according to www.noob.com, we are less than 24 hours away from knowing the truth for sure (as a matter of fact, the timer reads 14 hours at the time of this writing.) Personally, I have mixed feelings towards the possibility of a crossover (primarily because I wanted the next MK game to be a true sequel in the sense of the word).

Brace yourselves, folks, and keep your eyes on this thread.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe!
« Reply #14 on: April 18, 2008, 06:47:24 AM »
Well, folks...it's confirmed.

The next game in the MK series is going to be a crossover title between Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics. Take a look at this poster for the game, which shows Sub-Zero staring down Batman:

I take it back....this can actually be quite awesome.
Stick around for more details!

Would much rather see a Capcom Vs DC than this. It just the MK world doesn't really mesh with the DC. I wonder how MK fans are going to react to a MK game with no fatalities.

We'd have to wait and see. We don't know yet if that game will lack Fatalities. As some people have already pointed out, DC has taken a somewhat darker turn as of late with their characters and storylines (remember when Wonder Woman snapped somebody's neck?)

It might be fun to see what MK could whip up with the DC storyline.
Once it does NOT, and I repeat, NOT become the next 'Rise of the Imperfects' (highly unlikely, I know, but I really hate that game. Screw you, EA!)

You know, when you really sit down to think about it, there are a lot of character parallels between MK and DC. I could probably point out a few:

- Mr. Freeze and Sub-Zero
- Black Canary and Sindel
- Wonder Woman and Sonya
- Darkseid and Shao Kahn

If they have the right mix of characters and a decent fighting engine that involves many of the versus conventions (super meters, tag team gameplay, gimmick moves), then this game might do well. I know the title by itself has a lot of potential.

Ironically, I'd still have preferred this game to be a proper sequel to Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Anyway, there's supposed to be an exclusive video of the game coming up soon on GameRadar, so I'll fill you guys in when it does surface.

I don't know about you, but I want to see Wonder Woman and Sonya tangle.

I hear they'd look damn good in mud.

EDIT: The official trailer has been released. View it here:
http://mksecrets.net/indexeng.php

EDIT #2: Reactions so far have been mixed to this turn of events. I'll show you one of the more negative ones.

Summary: HEY GUYS IM A BIG MK FAN AND IVE BEEN KICKED IN THE NUTS EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN'T SEEN HOW THE GAME PLAYS YET!!!11

Now, in my opinion, the gameplay looks a tad stiff, especially when Batman swings at Sub-Zero in the video. Now, mind you, the guy does have a valid point...many of the MK fans (including myself) were expecting a true sequel to Armageddon and some closure to the unfair cliffhanger that the last game left us with, and this isn't exactly what we were hoping for. Midway has a few months again to polish the game, so let's see what happens in the end. You know. Instead of basing a review of an entire game off of a teaser.
