DVD Media you trust
« on: March 08, 2008, 05:50:10 PM »
so, i bought some DVD blanks today....

looked up the brands on a couple review sites ( after purchase.. doh!)

apparently, on one site, the brands i bought have a somewhat lousy success rate ( based on the rep of the original manufacturer of the media, and the batch,  not the rebrander)

out of curiousity,
what about listing media you trust( and what you won't touch with a 10 foot pole) , and your burner(s)?

I also use Benq alot...
Almost all my data and movies are on the format...
Ridata here and there.....

Twice I went out of this formula to Verbatim (experienced EXTREME data loss)
and to TDK.... more data loss...  :shakehead:

I use the silver top Ridata, had very good experiences with Fuji, some Benq and E-Gear Blanks from Target

Will never use princo, gigablock or memorex

Sony DVD media is the best I've used, but tend to be a tad expensive.
RIDATA does the job adequately for now.

The Pioneer DVR-212D SATA drive is one of the best that you can buy,
and they're rather cheap too.

Not me and dvd's again. Ive used them all and ALWAYS had the most important disc fail me. Hard drive FTW. Although the price per gigabyte is higher, hdd backup is DEFINATELY the way to go. For more reliability, there's always raid or simple copy/paste action on multiple drives.

I use Ridata (silver) for my DVD blanks at this time. No complaints.

but I am surprised to hear Princo getting bad ratings. I recall DVD pirates used to swear by that brand.

Yeah, the guys who sell dvd's and $5.00 for one. Its the cheapest media in trinidad, I think by ECC is sixty something dollars for
50. And dem pirates don't care bout loss of data or precision burning. They have to burn at 4x with them sh!tty blanks. I personally burn at 12 and 16x with the hp and phillips respectively. Not one complaint thus far.

Also, I think most media is in general good, given that it is being used in a well supported burner.
Lite-On = cheap/not well supported without major firmware updates <-- then it is doomed to fail.

Believe it or not, one of the best burners i have ever seen was an NEC 3540, this burner cost me about 29.99USD and I have burned
over 700 disks with this, and to date it is still going strong. Compared to, during the lifespan of this burner, 2 lite-on's and 2 lg's.

But i never experienced any data loss from the lg's, only the lite-on and mainly on, u guessed it PRINCO and GIGABLOCK disks.

So I do think that media and burners go hand in hand. You really want the best then check this out
