advice on next gen console choice
« on: February 24, 2008, 07:37:49 PM »
so i thinkin about buyin a console..

i doh really care much for fps, racing, party or sports games..

i lookin for rpgs

was thinkin ps3 , cuz for the past two generations, sony had rpgs locked..

but i saw the ad for lost odyssey and read some reviews.. and i want it.. lol

lookin at the ps3's current library, and the 360s, i not seein much to inspire besides a handful.. and then again, a lot of the rpg games today are MMO-ish.. and i lookin for the traditional rpg experience

thinkin I am better served just buyin a second hand ps2 and play all the good ish that i missed out on, and then later when this generation's consoles mature with their offerings, i might get a better idea of what to do..

any advice?

don't forget that the ps3 is backwards compatible, so while you're playing your good old PS2 rpg's the new ones may be well on the way right?

the price should be well on it's way down as well. So seeing that you already have the best RPG platform on the planet (namely, a PC) you can easily go the PS2 route, enjoy all that goodness and spring for the PS3 at a later date when it makes more sense to do so (titles wise)

The down side of that, is you gonna spend money on a PS2. Might not have much resale value when you do go for the PS3.

Bestest bet would be to get a pal who has a PS2 idling to lend you it. lol

Can't argue with free.

Also, if you haven't played greats like Chrono Trigger on the supernes, get some emulation action going on to pass the time.

But if you're an rpg man with a PC, your cup supposed to be running over. Guildwars and WoW alone = pwnage, never mind the hundred of regular rpgs available like Baldur's Gate and Morrowind..

(yes, I'm an rpg fan)

There are no backward compatible PS3's available at the moment. the 40GB are not, and thats all u gonna find. Maybee trini have some 60 GB which is the best version to get.

U want RPG's go PS2. There really isnt a huge list of titles available yet for next gen really.

Im on Lost Odyssey right now and it is an amazing title. 30+ hours and im only just into Disc 3. And this is without trying to get EVERYTHING.
But in all honesty hold on a while....another year. For now PS2 is a VERY good choice for RPG.

Yeah, PS2 for it.
Though 360 would be the best next gen bet for RPGs.

Lost Odyssey is the top game for the 360 at the moment, but that's only one game. Mass Effect and Oblivion can be played on the PC (Mass Effect PC version coming soon).

Like everyone said, PS2 is the way to go.

Final Fantasy XII, X, X-2
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
Shin Megami Tensei
Dragon Quest 8

You have part of my attention - you have the minimum amount.

I would have to suggest the PS2 (which is dirt cheap now) as your RPG console of choice atm. It has a nice library (unless you've been there done that) and it's the most affordable option. Otherwise i'd say the 360 isn't a bad option as it does have a few really good RPG's Mass effect being the latest addition. If you are thinking about additional functionality (meaning getting the most out of your console) keep in mind that the PS3 is a BLURAY player that can play games and the 360 is a console that can play HD content. So it depends on where the core of your usage lies. I would suggest as far as backwards compatibility goes, be careful with the PS3 as some model (esp the European ones) have limited backwards compatibility since they removed the hardware acceleration for such. I am unaware what is the current status with the US versions, but check it carefully before you decide.

Just thought of an alternative, you could actually get a 360 and play the next gen RPGs and still play some of the old XBox ones using their backward compatibility. It's pretty much the only thing that goes BC with last gen anymore. Just a quick glance at the 360 Backwards Compatibility List and I see Fable, Jade Empire and both KOTOR games on the list. Course you can play this stuff on PC, but some people just don't want to.

Original XBox wasn't really a RPG powerhouse like PS2 was, but you will find stuff to give time for more next gen offerings to be released. And your investment will be future proofed.

lol @ people who don't want to play RPGs on the PC.

That position is depriving them of the penultimate rpg experience.

Ultima, WoW, Guild, and every D&D derivative known to man.

Wow? You must be crazy. WoW is a little *too good*. Unless you have no competitive drive, WoW is a life ruiner.
Also PC RPGs are exclusively WRPGs. They have no JRPGs to speak of at all. So it really only reflects half of the genre.

This is just me here but...

A PC would be a good decision for RPGs and strategies (not that i care for the latter), but if iz a 7th Gen console, then i'd say go to 360 it got some sick-looking rpg titles, PS3 useless now for PS2 RPGs since they discontinued the hardware required to play them. You're best option would definitely be a ps2 if yuh REL want yuh RPGs.

lol @ wow the life ruiner. I stay far away from it myself but cannot deny the greatness of the game. It's an RPG-ers wet dream.

as for WRPG vs JRPGs

What about Lineage2? That comes over as very JRPG-ish and it's on the PC.

Now we are getting into MMO's not just regualar RPG's.
THis is a COMPLETELY different scenario you talkin about here.
/agree with Exar on WoW.....from first hand experience LOL

can't talk about rpgs without getting into mmorpgs.

They are the epitome of the genre afterall!

From the cutesy ragnarok to the hard core guild wars. The NPC based rpgs can only come so close in their emulation of the holy grail that is mmorpgs.

(thread hijack alert, lol)

MMO's are a branch of RPG's as in they were spawned from them. WHat started off as tabletop RPG evolved to computer RPG which further branched into MMORPG.

please try to understand the difference in character design in an RPG as compared to an MMO

the characters in RPG's have to be more detiled, better backstory and some more depth. Not t mention cut scenes, cinematics to include the development.

This is not to say MMO's have none atall. Hardly...but do not perceive to think just because someone likes an RPG they will like an MMORPG.

RPG's are primarily single player based. You are in control of your entire party and design them to your preferences. MMO's is completely based on playing with other people online. The element of using real people for interaction makes MMO's a completely DIFFERENT style of gameplay. It relies on communication, working as a team AND putting up with the BS of other people who QQ about loot (aka. loot whores) - Exar Kun can elaborate. You know how hard it was to organize 40 men to logon every night to raid? (now 25). And then WIPE on a farm boss all......f*cking....night!!! because for SOME reason the Tanks were riding the mc SHORTBUS? you dont have sh!t like that in RPG's.

to DEFEND the MMO genre tho. There is no greater feeling than working together with people to accomplish a goal in a raid .......PERIOD. Its the same as a clan pwning base in UT/COD4 or w/e. Group effort is harder...but yields more rewards. But we are digressing here.

Something else to make very very clear. Playing an MMO by yourself, completely failing to interact with people or join guilds, teamup for quests etc. totall defeats the purpose of an MMO, which is necessary for regular RPG's which are STRIGHT up PvE based.

another note, this original post was focused on consoles. Keep it there please.

My advice is as stands - you will completely satisfied with PS2 RPG's.....guaranteed.

if push comes to shove though....you can always LARP.:P

doh try that.

You using your knowledge of WoW to equate the entire MMO experience.

There are MMOs out there that allow you to PVE to your hearts content and carry along NPC "henchmen" so that you precisely do not have to interact with human beings. In effect, allowing you to have your cake and eat it too. (Yes Guild Wars should be coming to your mind, those of you that have played this gem)

Is an MMORPG experience different to a traditional single player RPG, yes...
does it offer a superiour RPG experience.....yes

Of course, all of this is a matter of opinion (in this case mine) as seen from the eyes of an avid proponent of the genre. Love 'em all.

And don't get me wrong, I ain't trying to turn disciple into a vegetable by sending him into MMORPG heaven. (avoid the place myself for fear of being sucked into the matrix for good)

Just highlighting what should be the obvious as he mentioned an interest in "RPGs" as the driving force behind this console purchase.

Oh and in an attempt to stay on topic, I have a PS2 fixing by JK for the longest while. If you want, you can take a borrow once it comes out of the shop.
