i cant give the forward on those reccomendations, mainly because there was no mention of the 920
which is ridiculous since its just a lower clocked 940, so that couple hundred dollars could have well gone into places needed.

Taken the essence of this exceptional effort by w1ntry and broken it out into separate threads on the forums, where we can maintain the specs for the respective machines.

Should make it easier for the audience to find without crawling through the various threads to glean a recommendation for a particular budget.

It is a stop gap solution until we can get the more meatier article format going.

What you guys think?

yeah nice vid. He should've installed a better HSF though. :D

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

Maximum PC - Dream Machine 2009: How To Build the Best PC For Any Budget!
« Reply #73 on: July 30, 2009, 09:53:40 AM »
In these hard times it is good to know that you can still get a quality components for a decent price....

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/dream_machine

Sometimes, you just have to keep things real. Last year, our Dream Machine was a paean to excess, a chrome-plated $17,000 wünder-rig. While we’re still quite fond of that machine, this year we decided to take a different tack and see if we could build a more reasonably priced, but still lust-worthy Dream Machine. Well, actually, we built three of them. While the combined cost of these three machines is about half the price of last year’s rig, we packed a lot of awesome into our relatively tight budgets. The lesson is simple: Dream Machine isn’t about spending a ludicrous amount of cash on a PC, it’s about getting the best rig you can for the money you spend. I think you’ll agree that these three machines pack a ton of power and are all great values.

Build the Best Gaming PC for Any Budget

What yall think of this article?

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2365957,00.asp

Quote
It's a great time to build a fast, new PC. With stellar titles like Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins—Awakening, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Supreme Commander 2, there's plenty of good stuff these days to dive into. But that means you'll also need top-of-the-line parts, an unusually understanding spouse, and a high credit card limit, right?

Not so fast. Despite what you may have heard, you don't have to spend a fortune building a gaming PC. Prices have continued to drop throughout 2010. With the advent of giant killer parts like AMD's excellent Radeon HD 5770 video card and Athlon II X3 440 CPU, and Intel's LGA 1156 desktop CPU socket, it's possible to build great gaming PCs at surprisingly low price points.

In fact, today, you can build a solid custom PC for just $500—and therefore, break into this hobby on the deep end. A machine like this can easily play newer PC titles, at least at reasonable levels of detail. A bit later in this article, we'll show you exactly how to do that.

But what if you're a little more fortunate and have, say, $100 more than that? What's the best way to invest that extra cash? We'll also tell you what you can add that will make that $500 system even better. (It turns out you can boost its performance by quite a bit.) We won't stop there, either; what if, instead of an extra $100, you have $250 more? You can swap two or three components out for better ones, and boom—you now have a killer $750 PC. And so on.

This decision-making process is something we've wanted to cover directly for a long time. For this article, we're going to walk the novice PC builder through the component selection process, at six different price points. The good news: You don't have to be constrained by the amount of money you have. There are always numerous ways to solve any sort of configuration problem.

We want to take as far as possible the elemental idea that PC building is a modular activity—with sweet rewards at many different price points.

In reference to this article, I am looking to build a machine for a friend using this parts list -

Component    Model    Price
CPU    AMD Athlon II X3 440    $75
Video Card    Gigabyte Radeon HD 5670 1GB    $90
Motherboard    Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2    $50
Memory    Kingston HyperX 2GB DDR2-1066    $43
Hard Drive    Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB    $48
Optical Drive    Lite-On iHAS424 DVD burner    $23

Any recommendations on alternative parts or you think I good with this? It is for someone who doesn't really play games but wants a decent machine to be able to download and watch HD Movie files.

Once you talkin HD-video, make sure the mobo chipset and CPU could handle it.  I say go with the Athlon II X4 CPU and a 790X mobo.
It costs a little more but that combo will handle HD easy....even without a dedicated GPU.

Hmm looking at that combo, you meant that he could forego a graphics card for now and run with the integrated graphics? Not seeing integrated graphics listed on the board specs tho.

I dont see the need for 790 and x4 for a basic non gaming machine when there is a discreet card in the mix. That said woody, i'd say the specs you listed are perfect, machine will even do light gaming. I'd just encourage to double the memory depending on what os is being used. Personally, for win7 i'd use no less than 4 gigs.

That board arc post doesnt have integrated video, which is not where i'd go. Alternatively, I would look at this board, ditch the video card, ramp up the memory (even more reason to do this as 1) you saving money on the entire build and 2) the video will take a chunk of system memory) and keep everything else. That onboard video paired with the x3 would have no problem playing 1080p flawlessly. Light gaming may be too much for it though.

Light gaming vs no gaming, cheap vs cheaper. The choice is yours.
