help! laptop infected with W32.Virut virus
« on: December 27, 2007, 03:08:39 PM »
anyone know how to get rid of the W32.Virut virus? The laptop is an Averatec 7100 Series with Win XP Home installed. It turns out that the virus is memory resident & infects all .exe & .scr files that are accessed... even the AVG antivirus when scanning for viruses detected its own exe files as being infected, as well as a strange file in the system32 folder...now it seemed to "heal" the files although i read online that the some files might still be corrupt. i cant start windows in normal mode.. it keeps logging off as soon as I log in so im using safe mode.. if it is memory resident, does anyone know what process it is so I can kill it? Once its not running I could safely clean all files without having to worry about more files being infected I hope I doh have to reformat cause I have never got an OEM cd to reinstall Windows. any help will be appreciated

I can probably give you a copy of Kapersky MWAV AV on a CD.
Boot to safe mode and run a file called mwavscan.exe
Let it run and scan entire PC for viruses.

Alternatively, you can try to use the online scanners.

I am also curious if your laptop does not have a hard drive-based OS recovery tool or a tool to create OS recovery CDs/DVDs. That is what is done nowadays.

All else fails, you will probably have to give lappie to an experienced technician.
God is dead.

well thanx but it seems to have gone now... since I couldnt even start windows in safe mode I took a Win XP reinstall CD which came with my Dell desktop and ran the repair option, which seemed to just reinstall the whole of Windows... it started up.. then I had to reactivate Windows wit the Laptop Prod key... then it (an AVG virut remover) ran a scan b4windows loaded (which is what i tied to do but Windows wasnt starting up at the time) then I ran a general scan in AVG Antivirus which cleaned/deleted some more files.. will probably have to reinstall java & 1 or 2 other programs

i remember about 3 weeks ago there was what seemed to be spyware on the machine which actually damaged AVG... & I didnt get around to reinstalling it & xmas night I dl a couple torrents & surfed a couple website with no AV protection so i guess the nasty virut slipped through & started secretly messing wit lappie... someting told me that I should reinstall AVG.. right after I did it it started giving me several alerts... guess is a good ting I didnt delay in reinstalling it otherwise I might of had to just reformat or something... btw it does have a recovery tool..but it was an evaluation version & it expired about 5 mths ago so I didnt bother to try

things is ...symantec says the risk is very low..i guess that means the chances of getting it are low.. it cant possibly refer to the damage since it infects exe files inc. system files which rendered my laptop useless until i repaired the OS
