By now you may be aware that The Hobbit will now be a trilogy, instead of two movies.

The response to that interesting piece of news was either "Yay! More Hobbit!" or "How on earth can three movies be made from that book?"

My response - In Jackson we trust! =]

Anyway, the third movie now has a title and release date. Or rather, the title of the second movie has been renamed.

Here is the lineup now:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14, 2012)

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (December 13, 2013)

The Hobbit: There and Back Again (July 18, 2014)

Quote

When it comes to his J.R.R. Tolkein adaptations, director Peter Jackson has always found a home in December. All three movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy were released in the final month of the year and both Hobbit movies are scheduled for that time as well. The final installment, however, the recently-announced third Hobbit movie, will be the first to come out during the summer.

THR has learned that Warner Bros. has not only given the third movie in the trilogy a release date and a title, but has also changed the title of the second movie. The trade reports that the third Hobbit movie will now go by the name The Hobbit: There And Back Again and will be in theaters on July 18, 2014, while the name of the second movie has been retitled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. What's probably the most amazing part of this news is that even though the movie is still two years away, it already has competition on that weekend. It was previously announced that Twentieth Century Fox plans to release X-Men: Days of Future Past - the sequel to X-Men: First Class on that very same Friday. Production on the second sequel is currently planned for next summer in New Zealand.

Said Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman about the decision, “We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure." Added Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of International Distribution, "The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be an action spectacle and an emotional conclusion for this already much-anticipated trilogy. Opening in the summer will maximize playability for what promises to be an event film for fans the world over.”

I must say that this news kind of disappoints me. Much like how the new movies are being shot in 48 frames per second and 3D, this is another example of how The Hobbit movies are breaking with continuity established by the Lord of the Rings films. As for the competition with X-Men, chances are that one of the two projects will blink and move to a different date. Which one it will be is a question mark.

Milking it? Hardly. That book has content for a whole 3 seasons of a TV show worth and more, much less 3 movies. Plus most trilogies have to fish and chips for extender content, with LotR it's the opposite they have content for years! I like how they bring out the songs this time around in the movie, the other books had allot more that wasn't shown in the movies... My Precioussssssss........ :B

They are milking it talk done. I think the Hobbit was a fanstastic book, had me gripped from start to finish... that being said, whilst the pace of the Hobbit is much faster than the LOTR series, it was also no longer than any 1 of the books. I read it out in the space of 3 days and i'm a SLOW reader.
Thing is for instance, Jackson stretched the battle for helmsdeep to AN ENTIRE MOVIE... it was no more than what... 3-4 chapters in the book??? so his ability to STRETCH out a story is WELL known. Whether or not it is WARRANTED is another matter. Seeing as clearly he can over-emphasize certain parts and completely LEAVE OUT (*cough* Tom Bombadil) other parts.
If he intends to STRETCH this movie to 3 parts, he BETTER NOT MESS WITH ANYTHING SUBSTANTAIL (*cough battle at Minas Tirith *cough totally screwed this up*). That's my take on this.

Milking it indeed, it was a great book, read this before the other three but it wasn't 3 MOVIES worth. Maybe 3 hours worth. 3 movies is looking at 6+ hours for the least. If that's the idea then LOTR should have been 5+ movies.

Oh well, he will probably get my money regardless.

Nice one at TG too, clear and concise.

Legolas seems to be getting a lot of screen time, for someone not in the book.

Put me down in 'Yay, more Hobbit', yes.
That's why it's  called an 'adaptation'.

I read the book too...but if Peter Jackson could make 3 wicked movies out of it...who am I to complain?

Milk it yes.  :)
